for the next few days im visiting fam down in Tucson but when i get home its cleaning time! i got the kiddie pool for the engine and lots of mineral spirits and brushes. question. im going to rebuild the oil pump and i am going to take the "pressure springs" out and clean that area up. what should i lube the pressure regulating springs with? im thinking assembly lube...

today i made great progress on cleaning the block. i used a kiddy pool with some solvent and a brush worked well. i also marked and started to remove pistons from the rods for cleaning before i send them to get fly cut for the euro heads. i can only soak 2 in the carb dip can at once, so it will be a few days. some of the rings came off, but most are stuck in the pistons.... :-(

yup, chem-dip. thats what im using. works well. the new stuff is not as powerful as the old light green colored berrymans or yester-year... but the new stuff works well.

I needed 4 days each piston to get them spotless.

Why do you say the older pan is better. I am interested because I am refreshing a 78 motor and it was suggested I upgrade to the newer system.

Thanks

almost got all the pistons cleaned for shipping to get fly cut. wow, some had so much carbon crap on them, i would not be surprised if the compression ratio was higher...

so i got the pistons all cleaned. one of them i kinda buggered up the top ring area by prying out a broken ring.... hummm. should be ok. im thinking i might send my second set of pistons to get fly cut as well, just in case.

so about this skirt coating....... what is it and who does it? i take it it is a friction reduction coating?

The coating on 928 pistons is iron from memory (ferrostan rings a bell?).

Its needed to stop the pistons galling on the cylinder walls - best thing to do is leave it well alone.. to not scrub with anything other than a reasonably soft nylon brush, using a non-caustic cleaner.
