Twenty three five is not a bad price for a well sorted 1991 GT

Decided to give the guy a call...he also has a white 88 conv. He's owned it for 3 years. Here's what I learned:

-No title
-It'll need a TB/WP...last done @ 1997
-AC has never blown cold since he bought it
-Dash has one crack
-2" patch of rust showing below one of the rear quarter windows
-Paint in great shape
-Chin spoiler intact
-No noticable leaks

No title, was it stolen, written off due to accident?

Isn't it easy to get a title in Alabama?

It's even easier to get a birth certificate in Hawaii.

Just kiddin, no title means trouble to me. This deal seems to have been proven too good to be true.

Going via a title company is as easy as it gets, I think, regardless of the state you are in. If the guy is the real owner, and he does not have a lien on the title, I don't see the issue to re-title the car, unless he has something to hide. Just saying. Then again, you can purchase the car from him and submit for an abandoned title (easily done in Alabama :-)). But why doing that, DMV will run a background check and contact the owner so if he is not the real owner than you are in deep water.

Yes this is the same guy. I thought the convertible was green - but now that I think about it was white with a blue interior with an automatic - sounds like the car. I had some pictures but they are gone now. The cars were owned by a lease company that went bankrupt. The cars were never turned over to the liquidator of the bankruptcy and instead were stored in a barn until, hopefully, they went out of the DMV computer. I called the liquidator who is now very old and retired. He was willing to give a release on the title for some unspecified amount, but then the owner folded on me for some reason. In fact, he was pissed I went around him and contacted the liquator (trustee of the bankruptcy).

At the time I would have bought the convertible and GT and then do a lien sale on them or have the liquidator give me a release. The liquidator was not interested in digging up old business since the bankruptcy was closed out some time back - 10+ years. It was the owner who blocked the sale going forward. Of course he could be accused of stealing from the bankruptcy.

As far as the cars they seemed to be low milage cars with lots of storage maintenace due. I do not think all the details were finished with the convertible as it was waiting for a few items. Supposedly it was done in Caliifornia. Fixing storage issues is not too bad. it does sound from the GT list of recent repairs that it is having gas issues.

Technically anyone buying the cars would be buying stolen cars. A shop could store and then lien sale the cars. Since it did not seem they had ever been reported stolen and the liquidator was willing to sign off for a fee there is a good chance of eventually getting a title. But there is also a risk during the process that some agency will seize them and you lose what you put up. They could be illegally dismantaled - which I think that is what the owner was suggesting but again you could get into trouble.

These are the reasons I passed on them a few years back.

I do not mean to be talking out of school. But these are the facts as I learned them. In this case the buyer should be very very careful. If the seller 10 years ago was willing to hide the cars from the bankruptcy court for what ever reason - well ... draw your own conclusion.

Knowing how difficult it is to maneuver through the legalities of that title mess, I wouldn't touch the car for anywhere near the ask. For a few grand, maybe.

Well, offer 2K for a 91 GT with 56K. Could be a sweet deal. If the guy has had the cars for that long with no success, 2K might seem pretty attractive.

...Of course, I offer this suggestion without thinking the whole process out...
...and I'm not gonna be the one to try it...
