Default 1980 Euro-S auto - interference engine?

Am I correct in assuming the 1980 euro-s auto that I bought has a piston/valve contact interference engine as far as timing belt failure is concerned? Also, how durable are the 3 speed automatic transmissions, I have no experience with them? I have read comments that the Euro-S auto is faster than the 85-86 US 4cam version 4spd autos? I guess I'll find out since I'll have one of each. Anybody ever use a stop watch to time their 0-60 in any of the 928models? Lastly a body & paint guy told me it is impossible to just paint a hood and have the color shade of paint match the existing fenders? He said the whole front of the car would have to be painted, any opinions on this?

Unless modified in the past all 1980 euro cars are NON interference.

For the painting, yes, a good shop will tell you that - I had my 86 feathered down the fenders, and the guy did a great job. Do not just paint the hood.

thanks Colin, I don't know where I got that wrong information about the Euro-S, I certainly am glad its a non interference engine. Ed, so the shop guy who told me that was correct about having to paint the front of the car, what would you consider to be a fair price to do it, he said he would take the front bumper off to do it. It's been many years since I had any car painted. thanks, Bill

The VIN on the car I'm getting is 92A0820714, guy I'm buying it from says its a Euro-S, don't have the car yet, I remember seeing a list of VIN numbers on 928's but can't remember the website where I saw it, quite a while ago.

Post a picture of the engine before you pay for it if the "S" is important to you.

You can check the block stamping, too. M28.12 is the automatic S code for that year.

Bill, paint prices seem to vary be geography for some reason. I had mine done in Western PA a few years back, and the shop did remove the front cover (get a new bead strip in advance - they are only like $15 or so), and they did the hood, feathered the two front fenders with full spray of the tops and feathered down the sides, plus I had him do the backs of the mirrors and the drivers door. It all came to around $3K +/-. You can get it done for less, but it will look it.

Glen, Hilton,Ed, Many thanks for the help, I'm really glad its a Euro-S would have been disappointed otherwise, I know paintwork is expensive but I'll have a nice car once it's done. In searching for 928's I always use the "do I like it for the price criteria", if so I buy it. I know its great to buy cars where all the work is done but those cars usually cost more unless you are really lucky to get a bargain. Bill
