What should I pay for this 928?
Hello Everybody.
Well I'm Dave and I am going to be getting a 928 soon. I am a BMW mechanic and I run my own tech service. Lots of BMW years logged.
First Porsche.
I am looking at a 1984 ROW 928S Black with Brown Int. AT
64,000 original miles, hardly driven these last few years.
2 Owners and full service history.
I have been speaking with his wife about all of this, he is currently out of town.
Everything works, no issues at all.
Tires are just about gone
Rear Hatch lock is not working
Minor oil leak in extreme cold (Which we had in January)
I have not driven the car, nor heard it run, I am dealing with people who actually live in my neighborhood, but she would have no reason to deceive me.
The car wasn't for sale I approached her about the possibility of selling it. He has owned it for 20yrs, but travels extensively for business, hence the LOW LOW miles.
Now personally as a mechanic I don't care how low the miles are, I mean I almost want something else to be wrong with it, so it will be a little more fun.
So long intro, but what is the going rate for something like this? I mean it's not rare by any stretch, but the milage is low and there aren't but 3 total in my metro that I know of.
What do you think?

You may end up with a lot more fun than you can imagine.
These low mileage cars (that one is not a low mileage 928 IMHO) are always priced WAY more than I think they are worth, but don't worry, some one will be along soon to tell you how wrong I am.

Well, first of all, welcome to the board. Although I see you have been watching us silently for some time.
It's gonna be real hard to say what that car is worth based on this description. A lot sounds good here, but post some pix to get some better answers.

Those are NOT LOW LOW miles btw, but the car sounds fantastic. If it is running correctly it should be quite fast. Get a drive in it and see if it is. If the thing does not feel fast and really pull hard above about 4500 rpm then something is not right.
Shifts should be very firm at full throttle but not jarring and at part throttle should be like butter! Do yourself a HUGE favor and find someone who can drive you around in a DECENT 928 before plopping down money on this one... Heck, maybe they would even let you drive it.
As for how much to pay... I say pay as little as you can get it for! Interior work (if done right) can cost a small fortune, but will look spectacular (Rob Budd and Paul Champagne come to mind) paint and body work can also cost a small fortune to do right!
If the paint and body are quite sound and presentable and the interior needs nothing more than a good scrubbing and maybe some trim bits replaced and maybe a seat bolster tear fixed AND the car runs VERY WELL... The car could be worth really good money...
These are a LOT of ifs and your great looking car might be my beater car... Your "perfect" interior might be my full restoration needed interior... There is just no telling and you have no close up highly detailed pics to look at to make a determination.
I have an '85 EURO S...I paid $3600 for it out of CA, it needed $3k in work to make it run even close to right (and many ponies are still missing...though I think a bit more tweaking and cleaning by someone good could get most of that back even) and it needed about another $1k in detailing work (paint deep cleaning, PDR and leather repair). I put new wheels/tires on it (both needed) and so I am in to the car for something on the order of $10.5k. I would honestly not sell the car for $13k right now! I love it and it really looks GREAT! Could it use a full repaint...YEA, but from 5' the thing is STUNNING!!!
So, I would be interested in the car you are describing at anything under $7500 if all is up to date and as good as I am inferring...

I don't care much for the automatics, especially in the Euro models. You might want to drive a few different cars before jumping on this one.
Fair price without a thorough inspection, unless it has some obvious deal killer issues, is hard to guess, but around $5k it should have very little wrong with it.

Welcome.
Maintained, clean and original, undamaged, unadulterated, 5K could be a fair value. If you can, get Blown 87 or another pro or local enthusiast to review it from a 928 expert perspective.
I prefer the 84 16V automatic over the 85/86 as an all-around touring car. Its just so much simpler than the 32V. Good luck with the purchase.

'82 to '84 US ATs are probably the least sought after 928s. Still nice cars and fun, though, and some of the most bullet proof of the all year models. No clunky CIS to deal with, no thrust bearing failures, and no worry about bending valves if you happen to dump a timing belt, and none of the clunky shifting of the early 5 speeds. The deal on price should be all about the paint and the leather. A good used motor or tranny for one of these cars can be had for a song because nobody needs them. An uncracked dash or unworn driver seat is a different matter.

If it is a Euro ROW car the odometer/speedo was no doubt replaced when the car was imported.......so pretty much kills the low miles story. The automatic is also a big hit to value for many people. It's value is much like big BMW sedans where the repair expense and complexity of the car overshadows the positives in many peoples eyes.....James who is the resident cheerleader for all things 928 puts it at $7,500. I would be thinking something like 1/2 of that. But he has bought many 928s, I have only purchased four of them

Personally, with the market what it is these days, I think about $4000 to $5000. There was a roughly similar S4 on eBay just the other day that did not get a bid with the opening at about $6100, if I recall correctly. That puzzles me even with the market being pretty low.
If this car really is for sale, I would wait for the owner to return to be sure he is interested in selling it and not just his wife, as suggested. Then you need to ask him how much he is asking. Since it was not listed before and only might be for sale upon you request, between you and him this will be a seller's market, so I would not expect much flexibility in his price whatever it is.
However, I bought an airplane once just about like this after talking to the guy's wife first. When I talked to him he said his price and since it was reasonable and in my budget, I bought it without dickering with him. You might find the same or similar situation here; and with the input from this forum you might be able to tell how close he is to the market, which I take was your request in the first place. Adding my recent purchasing experience:
1) The 84 US is a good 1st 928. Fun enough to keep adrenaline pumping but easy enough to mess with. (especially since you have you're own shop!)
2) Watch out for that "low mileage." The odo could be intermittent and ends up registering 1/3 or 1/2 the milage. But since you don't seem to care about it...
3) As for how much? I paid 5k for mine with exact same description as yours last month. (minus the owners info) And I drove mine back up from LA to SF in the middle of the night. (Well, she passed her 1st litmus test) Did I pay too much? Did I get a steal? I dunno, but I feel like 18 again when I'm driving her!!!
