Rods (R1?) are original as far as I know. Serial number on block indicates it was for a manual trans equipped car, so it should be the original block. This is actually a late vin '93, but I don't think that changes anything about the rods. Replacement blocks were all serial numbered for auto trans cars (even if they were put into manual trans cars as replacements). I read that somewhere. I think most folks here would say the original rods hold up quiet well except for tracked or autobahn driven cars, which this one is not.

I wonder what the stats are on the R1 rod failure? Never hear that much about it, just speculation.

Dave,

From what little I know and have seen, if the engines made it past 20K before showing any negative issues..they were usually good to go as well as any 928 engine.

I know for sure one of the 93 5 Speed GTS had a brand new "auto" marked Block installed by Porsche. FYI, It had just had the M28 marking and no serial number.

FWIW, I would have no problem/reservations with your GTS engine...I have been under the hood enough and seen/felt it run too many times, and it shows none of the signs I have seen of the issues on the few "bad" versions.

DR,

Thanks for that. It is the best running car I have ever owned.

Pheeeew! I'm glad you decided not to sell it. Keeps me from having to sell mine and come up with the difference to buy yours. I have gotten to the point where I would prefer a 5-speed most of the time.
