It's doesn't take all that long to replace the IMS with an upgraded one. There is a site sponsor that specializes in this. Helped install one in a Boxster last year, nifty set up and would be the first thing I'd do if/when I pick up a 996.

Been leaning towards one for a while now. Wife wants one as a daily.

IMS failure can be prevented and is not as rampant on M96 engines as some here would lead you to believe.. You can do an IMS upgrade in about the same amount time and for about half of the money as doing the timing belt and water pump on our beloved Sharks. At the same time you can do the RMS and have a very nice reliable 996.

I suggest looking at the later models with the 3.6 base engine making 315HP. They really run well stock and can be pumped to 350 fairly easy. IMO the 3.6 is a classic 911 engine displacement because iof it being used in the 993, 964, 996 and is currently in the 997 base Carrera.

What about the crank shaft breaking in half on some of the 996 engines? I remember reading about it on the 996 section few months ago, but cant recall if it was an issue with the material used for the crank or the IMS bearing.

I am looking at the C4 as well I sure would like a C4S!! I live in a town that gets a little snow and I want something newer than my 928. I can buy a C4 and drive it all year round. Then I can buy another 928 and put a S/C on it! I am not a huge fan of the 911s unless they have AWD to keep that rear end from coming around on me!
