Is there any new recommendation on coolant to use? I have used 50% Havoline Dexcool with distilled water and a bottle of water wetter in the past and is it still the way to go?
Thanks

I'm running Zerex G-05 50/50 with distilled water and a bottle of Water Wetter. The Zerex is available at Carquest and Napa. It has been recommended many times here on the list.

I recall that DexCool is not recommended. If you switch, be sure to fliush; Dexcool and Zerex may not play well together because of the sodium silicate in the Zerex.

I have been swapping over to Zerex Go5 seems to be a good choice as a lot of others have as well,
get it at NAPA pick up 2 gallons of coolant,
and 2 gallons Distilled water at the supermarket

What Matt and Stan said....

If swapping to G05 from something else, make sure to do a complete flush, to include drain plug removal. I would assume would be doing that anyway.

From what I have been told, and have learned from chemist, you would want to use an extended life coolant that doesn't have silicates. Silicates can cause pre-mature water pump failure. Texaco/shell originally developed the extended life (OAT) coolants, and performed many long term tests with them. I believe the G05 has silicates?

So what is the procedure if you have no idea what the PO has in there, but everything seems to run nice and cool??

Drain, flush and refill with new Zerex, VW dealer stuff, or something else??

I use Amso...

Wait.

I use whatever is silicon- and silicate-free, including Dexcool, from my Friendly Local Auto Parts Store. No problems.

There was a Decool issue years ago (5+) and it's resolved. BTW - "Dexcool" isn't a specific brand but a label to show compliance with GM specifications. Just like "Dexron" is for ATF.
