So, I had a change of heart about my fan setup...

Picked up my contour twin fan today. $38 at Pick and Pull. No V6 models, but in looking around the 16v four cylinder had what appears to be the same twin fan set up. The standard I4 was just a single fan. Cannot believe how easy it was compared to removing a stock 928 fan. Two 10mm nuts, one on either side, disconnect the easy-disconnect wire terminals, and pull it straight up. Like taking toast out of a toaster.

My electric fan on the '85 is just like this too. If the coolant is high enough, it will stay running after the engie is turned off (many newer cars are like this from the factory). This removes some of the heat soaking potential but even in the worst case, my fan (single 16" Hayden) didn't run more than 60sec. after engine shutdown.

I recently did the conversion to the Contour fans (works great), fortunately I was able to get the seller to send the plugs with the used fan setup I purchased. Just in case, I had done a little searching, the plugs are readily available on Ebay or NAPA:
Ford Wire Harness Connector - EBAY
Ford Wire Harness Connector - NAPA

I am also interested in this set up with the Contour fans. Maybe I missed this too, but what exactly are you pulling from the wreck yard, the fans (x2) alone or the fans and the shroud. I looked at one on the weeknd and could not figure out how to remove the shroud.
According to Adam (ATB) he only removed a few bolts and found joy. So Adam, are you retaining the 928 Shroud?
Please and thanks

If you couldn't figure out how to remove the fan/shroud at the wreckers, why not ask them to do it. Going from memory here but I'm pretty sure a couple of bolts hold it and then is just slides out.

Fred,
I put this in a '79 track car, so the mechanical fan was removed and the A/C fan in front was removed. The Contour fans come mounted in the shroud which encloses the majority of the radiator surface area.
(see below). I retained the top portion of the 928 shroud for the air filter intake ports. When you remove the Contour fans from a Pick 'n Pull, you take the shroud with the fans mounted in it, and the wiring harness which connects to the two fans, the A/C compressor, and then connects to the engine harness on the driverside front by the radiator bulkhead.

Thanks Imre & Adam. Man, i have to go look again. Yes, the fans came out lickety split but to me the shroud looked as it was molded around the rad and I just couldn't get it off after removing 3 or 4 bolts. There are lots in the wreck yard I went to and it was the same for every V6 Taurus I saw. I have to go back, I guess.

Fred,
I pulled the fans and shroud out of a V6 Contour and it is as easy as Adam said with the engine out. With the engine in, it must be wedged toward the rear to get the shroud body to clear the coolant hardline running across the front of the engine. I used a jack to push against the front header bar over the radiator - this worked, and got the assembly out the top.

Thanks also BigAl. I know what my problem was. I saw so many V6 Tauruses (expired Taxis) and I looked at those. They actually do come with 2 fans but with a fixed fibreglass shroud that is not easily removable according to Ford (I just called them). However, the Contour is different so I have to go back and find a Contour in the wreck yard. Not a problem as I actually love going to wreckyards.

Those fans are really slim. That would be a nice upgrade for my S4 too. Does anyone have wiring schematics to match the wiring harness up from the factory cooling fans to the Contour ones?
