I use my iPad everyday for work. It is also just simple to use it in the car as my iPod, nav, etc.
Since there are all these "Custom center dash" threads, I thought I would post a few pictures of how the iPad2 fits "Just sitting around" in the 928. Would be cool to come up with a nice way to mount it (other than velcro). Something easy to just "slide in" and out like a dock.
This is an iPad2 just sitting here. Need to move it to actually access stuff behind it. But nice for scrolling through music, maps, etc.
It will just sit on the dash. Kinda far away though.
Funny, I also just recently noticed how nicely my new Acer A500 Android tablet fits vertically in the console (about the same size as an iPad). Also been thinking about all the possibilities...
You need a 3G iPad for GPS, but this WIFI only $450 Acer has standalone GPS built in that works without a data connection. Doesn't work quite as well as a dedicated GPS, but it's usable. Google Maps caches a lot of data, so the maps you need are usually there even without a data connection. Haven't had much time to try it out on the road, but I think I'll have it there playing music and navigating on my next road trip. It blocks everything but the air vents, but who cares?
Looks sweet, but that's a Distracted Driver citation just waiting to be written out here in Californication.
That, and it makes a nice airborne missile in the event of a collision.
Not anymore distracting than this factory installed unit. (which they have put in cars for over 10 years now)
Also MUCH easier to see than trying to scroll though songs on a small screen of any kind.
As for becoming a projectile. That is why a mount would be good. But honestly sitting on the console it will probably just be forced into the console, not randomly bounce backward into the driver. Unless you are rear ended of course, but again, not with enough force to do anything but add another bruise.
Those factory things won't play video or games while the car is in gear either.
Both my Jeep and Audi nav would play video in motion with minor mods. So will ANY aftermarket video based stereo system. This is no different.
How you choose to use technology is up to you. I have found it very usefull and easier to see while in motion than ANY of the smaller factory or aftermarket NAV and music systems. No one mentioned playing games on it while driving.
As a smaller alternative: get yourself a 7" Android tablet. You can get them with 3G or 4G from Verizon, or with just wifi from the drug store (seriously!). They generally don't come with GPS, but you can pick up a bluetooth GPS module for a few bucks. If you need 3G, you can always do a mobile hotspot with your phone.
