Default Daily Driver Conditions?

What does a good 928 ask for to become a reliable daily driver?
I want to keep a 928 as just this... With this kind of thinking, am I just asking for trouble? I'd like to sell my current 928, 924, and other vehicle to have a nice 928 with my preferences.

Here is an example of what I love to go for:

So a 928 as a daily driver? Bad or Good?

Works just fine for me

Just make sure you've done the preventative maintenance on the usual failure suspects - e.g. rubber fuel lines, crank position sensor, fuel pump, LH rebuilt, MAF rebuilt, timing belt, etc.

That car's being sold by Michael Wilhoit - so its probably up to a pretty high standard already, especially in the highly expensive cosmetics criteria. Would make a great basis for a DD 928

I've been driving a 1989 S4 FULL time ( my only car ) for over 3 years now. I haven't been grounded over a weekend yet. Life is short...drive what makes you happy.

Just as above, my car gets driven daily as well. IF the known issues are addressed these cars will run more or less without fail for a LONG time!

I've put 160K miles on in 11 years. If I drive a car, it's this one, almost daily. Find one that has a complete maintenance history that has been done by the book, then just keep up with that. There are some quirks and weak points to which you need to pay attention. That way, if/when something untoward happens (e.g., LH brain failure, relays acting up), you'll recognize it and know what to do. Inspect the car periodically for condition of known wear and tear items (CV joints & boots, tie rods, balljoints, wheel bearings, brakes, crank endplay in automatics, steering rack, belts, hoses, etc.) and take care of anything that is marginal.

I think continued exercise keeps it in the 'sweet spot'

t-belt, water pump, pulleys, valve cover gaskets, motor mounts, oil pan gasket, chain tensioners pads, intake refresh, fuel lines, torque tube, all fluid changes, AC completely gone through, and new relays. Oh and lets not forget the 20+ year suspension. This is what I had to do to mine so far to make it a reliable daily. I have logged almost 50k miles on her and she has never left me stranded. Not trying to scare you just giving you facts. If you can do your own work thats the only option in order to own one of these cars IMO!

I've had two different 928's as daily drivers for 15 years now. First a 89 (lost in an accident) and now my GTS. Every day I drive with a smile on my face!

Well yeah, I bought one in November and have been daily-driving happily since then. I took it to the shop in May for check-up and spring cleaning, and got off pretty lightly considering. The main thing is getting a car that has had proper upkeep and is in perfect or near-perfect mechanical order. This may cost a lot more unless the cosmetics are poor. When I bought this car, the PO said he didn't think there was anything left to do for it, he had done it all. As expected this is a little bit optimistic, but it was close to the truth. This makes for a good daily driver and a great all-around car that is very much like a nearly new car, only a lot cheaper and more interesting. I think an awesome 928 is really one of the finest sports car purchases a guy could make, in terms of reward and value. But if it ain't in awesome shape to begin with, you could face some huge bills getting it in order, right? So what good will that do? Unless you enjoy the challenges that come along with that, some folks do like that.

Good luck,

Sean

My car is not a daily driver, however, it is my driving car by choice and it has only let me down three times in 11 years. Not as many miles as Bill's.

Fuel pump failure, LH computer failure of hybrid tile and auto box B2 Piston failure are the only time the car has let me down.

Fuel pump failure was by the impeller jamming via foreign object, B2 piston due to bad initial design by Mercedes Benz and LH computer failure (added tile by BOSCH) which was basically time dependent, around 15 years.

Fuel pump replacement and B2 Piston can be done by competent DIYer, however, the LH computer needs to be done by electronic engineer and there are a few who are known to members of this forum. Once repaired there should not be any more problems with the LH cpu.

Others have mentioned the other areas of concern to me monitored, mainained and cared for, however, with TLC (tender loving care) and yearly maintenance and a good degree of preventative maintenance the 928 is a excellent daily driver.

If you don't look after your car it won't take care of you.

I've daily driven 928's for 11 years now (115k split across two separate 928's). The secret is to drive them often and do all the routine maintenance and they will not give you any trouble. The problem with 928's is that they are built well enough where lots of deferred maintenance issues can build up before the car becomes undriveable. Don't let that happen and take care of the maintenance when it is required.

Do you think that 928 in the first post is worth it's price tag?

Also, what about the 928 in winter? On ice and snow? Obviously some supporting tires, but does it still handle good with all it's power?
I kept my current 928 indoors during the winter. I was too scared to take it out on the ice haha.

You live in f'n NEBRASKA.

Get a cheap Wrangler or ChevyK for whenever it feels safer than the 928. Which should equal about 39% of the year.

Make the current 928 a DD.
We can help.
I've read your blogs, you've made good progress but can achieve driveability faster if you focus on critical path items. With the power of rennlist, you will win.

On the interior, a Robb Budd carpet kit and a few used interior parts will go a long way --- even make it chick friendly.

Save the big money for some cool land.

I am considering keeping the cars still. My Daily Driver right now is a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer. It get's from A to B at least... Sometimes...

My current 928 would take a lot longer than I have time for if I wanted to get it in the kind of condition I want for it. I enjoy wrenching my projects, but having available time and motivation is just making the 924 and 928 just sit out there.
