A repeat:
Get an 8' 1x12 board. Cut a piece off that is the same length as the height from the floor to the top of the door sill. Attach to the remainder at a right angle (making an L) and brace it with something. Add padding top and/or bottom if desired. Stick the board inside the car and lay on it - much easier on older backs...

Also as you say, Do not remove the mounting screw, it only needs loosening enough to slide the Dimmer switch off. That little screw would be a bit of a struggle getting it back on.
The dimmer now works as intended, it,s no brighter but I now have consistent and even light.
