I planned to use my 15in Macbook Pro cause it's what I already have and Windows runs well on VMware Fusion.

However, the local mechanic that has been working on my GTS is installing the ST2 and planning to do all the tuning with his own laptop. Says it has to do with him standing behind the work he does to the car. He is excited about using the ST software, says it looks like some of the stand alone ECU systems he's worked with.

I'm interested in eventually using the carputer Hans is working on.

It has:
  • Intel Core i5
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Multiple data input options including Bluetooth keyboard
  • Multiple I/O ports including 2 x USB 2.0 ports
  • WLAN 802.11 b/g/n@2.4GHz

As long as I could figure a way to mount and preferably power it from the car, looks like it would work well.
Seems like a little overkill to me, but it will work nicely. (That's almost 4 times as much as I spent on my everyday laptop...) If I where to get another tablet,
I'd look for one with a smaller screen, maybe the HP Slate 500 8.9" (but only 1 usb slot) or the ASUS Eee PC T91MT. Easier to mount, a lot cheaper, and still
have all the functionality. FYI, I do have an USB keyboard with my tablet, but I don't usually use it.

Let me understand this...you want to spend $1000 on a tablet just for Sharktuning when a $200 netbook would do the same job just as well is not better.

Bill,

The Eee Slate EP121 lists for $2K...
And it's powerful enough to easily edit movies with.

Dang it, I hadn't even looked at the price.

But hey, it would have worked.

I had really hoped it would have been ready for a field trial by SITM.
I intend to use the Carputer and install a bunch of different sensors on the engine, 8 EGT's, 2 WBO2's many temp and pressure sensors, only what we can think of will be the limit on what we can do with the Carputer.
No more ugly add on gauge pods, no more cutting holes for gauges, just a lot of data to log.

Excited is a word that does not even come close to how I feel about getting one in my car.

I get to play with PCs .....

I REALLY like the Samsung 900 3x. Bit pricey at $1700 but slick, thin with SSD drive with backlight keyboard and bright display.

Also liking a tablet crossover (keyboard base removable) by Acer. Iconia Tab W has a nice bright display with 6 hours for tuning and touch screen. About $600

Stefan,

Forgot to mention that you can use a wireless keyboard with the Acer A500 ($450), via USB port, or bluetooth.

The Keyspan USB/serial adaptors work great, and support Win7 32 and 64-bit which many cheaper ones don't....

But you don't need a USB/serial adapter for the Sharktuner Mk2, it connects directly via a USB port.

Cheers, Jim

But ST 1 is serial only. I have an old IBM thinkpad with a serial port.

But you will need a serial port if you are using a LM-1.

If you want to get really serious, check out the Panasonic Toughbook's. Their fully rugged models still include a serial port. Plus, you can drop them from 6 feet, run them underneath a faucet , and they offer touch screen and keyboard/mice input. I probably wouldn't use it for just the sharktuner, but they make an awesome pc that you don't have to worry about if you bang it around.

If interested, I sell them for a living and would be happy to tell you more about them.
