Default Does this sound like a clutch problem guys?

Hey guys,

Well I have always wondered why the clutch pedal is a little stiff (Meaning more force to depress the clutch pedal), just figured it was how a Porsche clutch was. Well in the past week I have developed a squeak. This squeak is coming from under the car. This squeak only happens when the clutch pedal is depressed.

So, after doing some searching on the forums. It would seem that the pressure plate might be sprung (reason for the firm pedal), and the squeak is coming from the TB or the pressure plate.

The clutch engages great, no issues there. Just a firm pedal and a squeak.

I have also read you cant get certain parts for the clutch on the 1984S

Where can I get the parts then?

Also, I didnt see a "How to thread" for this cars clutch. And of course with my luck, my car will have the twin disk which costs an arm and a leg.

Thanks guys.

Squeak is from the throw out bearing.

Time for a clutch job.

The stiffness might also be the helper spring attached to the pedal. I've seen more than one broken.

+1 to probably both.

Yup. If it's making noise when the pedal is all the way down, you've got T/O bearing issue and you're in for the whole thing.

Even if you've got plenty of meat on the clutch you should do it all while you're in there. I think the '84 clutch is the same process as the '85 so you should find some write-ups on here about that. I had a thread a couple of years ago on here with links to some others. I think JKelly may have done one too.

The biggest PITA was getting the exhaust system down and out of the way. After that it's the easiest clutch you'll ever work on, everything is right there. The WSM is actually pretty good for this too IIRC.

Wow, I just looked back and I did this over 4 years ago.

The thread I found with LOTS of pics and a description of my ineptitude in doing this is here.

I got a lot of help from some of the big names on the site though, and they were all very patient with me as I tried to figure out what was essentially a very simple process.

One thing about my threads: You can bet that if anyone can find a complication in the way something should be done, it will be me. OTOH I can usually help anyone who tries something after me because of it.

I would also recommend anything that Stan (mrmerlin) has written about the clutch replacement.

Good luck!
