Its a good thing, i wasn't to worried it was only 5 mile from the garage and i've still got the OB brakes may not have been able to stop at all, much less a quick stop!

Oh wait.. it looks like this guy was pulling a 944..

In all seriousness, the 928 had a factory towbar option and with its V8 has a pretty good tow rating Obviously not as high as a Cayenne, but pretty good for boats, small cars etc.

Maybe not "this", but something else made in Zuffenhausen?

You haven't been around much lately... Hope you are feeling better!

Many moons ago, the car was sighted by Tony in Lost Wages, NV, and later advertised for sale. A 928 collector in Karlsruhe, Germany, purchased it and found it so poorly made that there is no chance he will ever be able to register it permanently in Germany. This collector also owns a 928 cab and truck with 928 body (the latter also can't be registered in Germany).

I towed my dirt circuit open wheel race car to a meeting a couple of weeks ago, a 500km round trip, and loved the experience, the twin turbos mean you can still out accelerate anything on the road even with the 1000kg race car and a heavy trailer on the rear.
Funniest part was pulling out of a service station, even with the extra weight on the rear it still broke traction at about 40 kph, cue, laughter all round. It is such a giggle having so much power at your disposal.

Pity I didn't take a photo, must do next time, 12th june.

Cheers Roy

That pic really gives one an idea of how much space is in the back with the seats folded forward.

My 928 was great to have when I helped a friend move. I pulled up in the car and right away got the ".....why the hell did you bring that - what are you going to carry? Shoeboxes?".

After I got a 26" TV, the disassembled stand it sat on, 3 pairs of skis, 12 curtain rods, a vacuum cleaner, and about 6 or 7 plastic bags full of stuff (not to mention the various smaller items that sat in the rear footwells) in the back (and closed the hatch), plus a large plastic garbage can full of kitchen supplies in the passenger seat (and more smaller stuff on the floor) they changed their tune.

So how well does a 928 tow? What is the tow rating?

I have always said towing is more about stability than just wheelbase and a heavy rig.

My Cayenne Turbo tows better than the trucks I have had. Not just from a power point either, better brakes, more stability.

Hi Nicole,

Thanks, yes a little better for now...gonna fight to stay that way and get even better.

Now that you mention it, that does ring a bell..and thanks for the "finished" pics of that yellow one.

I do remember the guy in Germany doing a song and dance to get the silver GTS truck (tandom wheeled one) registered...or did he register it in another country..I used to know this, but I can't recall it now.

BTW, when you coming to see us again? Jeannie and I really enjoyed you coming to SITM last year, even though with all the madness of the event we didn't get to spend as much time together as we wished.

Cheers,

Dave

From memory, it is 3000 or 3500?? I have one of the factory hitches here, pretty sure it has a tag on it. Will snap pic and post it if it does.

Depends on the definition of "towing"... this is what I call towing for sub-CDL(below 26,001lbs) levels. Pic below ...... and wheelbase and a Heavy Truck (ton plus) is where the stability comes from at that size.

If you have ever had a front tire blowout at 60+ on a 9% or higher grade with 16,000lbs of trailier (and scarier if you have a 928, OR a Cayanne Turbo INSIDE :-) ...you will be happy you have the long wheelbase and the 10,000lb "heavy rig". Actually is was amazingly and luckily uneventful. Heard a BOOM, followed by a beating sound as Jeannie says "what's that noise"..I said, "I don't know but the steering feels mushy" as I slowly eased it down with 11 big tires(and 1 wheel) worth of brakes and pulled over. Got out and the whole right front inner/outer sidewall was missing completely.....with a lesser tow vehicle...would have been a whole nuther deal.

You must have just had what we call "practice trucks"... you know the ones with just 2 wheels in the back....HA HA.. ..It's and ole redneck truck joke...all in fun!!!

Seriously is nice to see people actually using the Cayenne to their potential, most Cayenne owners I know will borrow a friends 1/2 ton truck to tow their track car, etc... When the Cayenne would in some ways, as you know, be better for towing something that small and light.

Someone recently posted a pic here of a Cayenne, on a snow covered road with ski racks on top of it...with a couple of big dogs inside. I love that pic showing someone actually USING one of those as it was designed to be used.

Reminds me of my Fav 928 promo video of a 928 kicking butt on dirt/gravel roads and splashing thru small stream crossings. Porsche doesn't build stuff out of toilet paper, heck, they are almost built "Ford Tough" in some ways and better/worse in others...

Kind of like some 911 owners who freak out when they get wet (the 911s, not them)...I promise, no Toilet Paper was used making that car!!!!

That seems awefully high for the 928. Most of those car trailer combos posted above probably exceed that.

The Cayenne is SOOOOO much more stable with a car hauler behind it than a pickup with a crappy 100 year old suspension design. I've towed a LOT! The CTT surprised me. Ovbiously, you're not going to pull a 5th wheel with it. But the tow rating is 8,000lbs. So most, not all, car haulers and tow behinds will fit in that range.

Seems the only way the American Engineers know how to "improve towing ability" is to increase the spring rate and lengthen the truck. and put a bigger motor in it. (although I'm always a fan of a bigger motor)

BEAUTIFUL! My next toy (only when I have a bigger garage!) will be a 71 Goat, hopefully a 4 speed convertible. Market for these is all over the place, right now.
