My 88 S4 driver side mirror broke, and since I wanted to replace them in the future at some point anyway I thought this gives me a good excuse. I really like the GTS style mirror better than the stock squarish mirrors I have now.
The only issue is that 2 sites are setting GTS mirrors for 1k for both...I really do not care about them being powered at all, are there any aftermarket options anyone else here has used that they could kindly recommend...?
thanks brothers...!

I bought a set of brand new, genuine factory GTS mirrors for my wifes '82 from Sunset Imports in Oregon, they were only $335 or so, shipped. Give them a call, I am positive they will have them for a LOT less than $1000.

Order just the housing parts (main and mount base), base gaskets, the actual Mirror plates, etc, the cost will be a lot less.
Then just reuse the mirror motor assemblies from your old mirrors (the glass mirror "plates" are interchangable). Saves money and eliminates wiring headaches as you retain the original wiring and connectors.
There is no doubt the Aero mirrors look better to most...BUT the actual function(seeing stuff beside/behind you) of the mirrors is degraded dramatically.
If you are a new 928 the transition is not so bad...if you have been using the older flag mirrors for years or a decade or more, the transition sucks and is very distracting for a long while :-)
So if you are a new 928 owner and know for sure you want to change..do it ASAP before your mind is programmed with the older style :-)

No disrespect intended, DR, but I'd offer that in my experience, I have found it easier to work with all new components rather than refit, as the cost to buy the entire kit from Sunset is cheaper than pricing out the individual components, and the wiring wasn't that difficult to swap over, at least for me, and I don't consider myself to be a wizard by any stretch of the imagination.
Also, I agree you give up a little bit fo viewing area, but the GTS mirros still work plenty fine, imo.

As far as easier, the last set of GTS mirrors I installed on one of mine took me 15 minutes to do each side using my method. Futzing with the base gaskets took most of that time :-)
Doing it with all new stuff takes 3-4 times as long, IF you have the right tools for repinning the connectors etc...much longer if you do not :-)
You can also snag the Aero mirrors used from 911 owners etc, on Ebay or where ever even cheaper..all you need is the 928 specific bases/gaskets, the rest is the same.

If you get the kit from Sunset be prepared to call DR or Jeannie, they keep the rest of the parts you WILL need to make it all work electrically, trust me on this, what you get from Sunset will not have all the right parts.

In the old days it was easy and you just ordered the "Kit".. a few years back the kits from Porsche started to arrive with parts missing, and usually it was hit or miss if they even included the MIRROR GLASS!!
This is what caused the prices to go up from those who sold them often.. we had to price them with the added cost of usually buying the Mirror Glass and other items separately to add to the "Kit" to be sure it was complete. There was never any way to know exactly what was going to come from Porsche in the Kits. It was an excercise in frustration for Vendors and the 928ers and all complaints to Porsche back then fell on deaf ears.
No sure if this has changed recently or not. But for anyone buying a Kit from whomever, be sure and check to see if any parts are missing immediately upon receipt before you start the paint/install process. The sooner you contact the Vendor, the better the chance of getting the parts that are missing ASAP.

Interesting to hear about missing parts, that wasn't my experience with them but its been at least two years since I ordered my last mirror set from them. I've done this a handful of times over the last ten years or so.
Also, thats for the details on your suggestion, DR, I'll give that a try down the road sometime.

You can get them for less than 1k for sure if you shop around. Especially for the manuel ones.
Like Dave said, it is a lot faster and easier to use the old motor.
They realy look good on the 928!

The past several sets I installed had everything in them, I've only heard about missing parts, have yet to encounter it. Also have not paid more than $450 for a set. I don't know where you guys are shopping :P
