1981 Euro 928 suddenly blowing black smoke and running horrible
out of the clear blue sky, my 1981 euro 928 has started acting as though it's only running on a few cylinders and is heaving black smoke. Any starting points on diagnosis or deeper thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am actually located in europe.....would injectors from an american supplier work on my 240HP car?

Warm up regulator or cold start injector is dumping fuel in would be my first guess.
2nd guess would be no spark at spots and the fuel is burning up in the cats, if you have cats that is.

All the CIS injectors are the same BUT it is NOT an injector problem ! Most likely a control pressure issue. Read up on CIS and how it works and note that the warm up/control pressure regulator sets the mixture all the time. To check pressure you need the fuel pressure gauges/kit and some specifications for the 928 CIS.

check your carbon canister if the diaphram in the accumulator ruptures it forces fuel through the carbon canister into the vacum lines and into the engine usually you will smell gas from under the pass side front fenderwell might even see raw fuel dripping from under the windshield washer tank. good luck..

Pull your air filter housing and check for fuel in the lower plenum below the air sensor plate. The same thing happened on my 78 euro when the lower seal went. It caused it to get fuel through the injectors and the intake air.
