Before you start messing with the hinges and shims and such, see what the new liner does.

It may (and the important word here is may) pull the whole hatch down a bit. That would put the driver side a bit low, but you can fix that.

Great thread and very helpful! Have had the mechanism in and out 4 times over the past couple of weeks. Finally nailed the worn item and it all works great. The mechanism is well put together and was fairly easy to put back and take out. Thanks guys for all your contributions!

Yep, that did the trick! Don't know how they became misaligned up there, but my car had a cell phone antenna snaked through the headliner at some point, so maybe someone loosened the wrong screw. Of course, the new liner did wonders as well.
