Question Wheel Offset Question

I have searched but could not find my exact answer so.....my buddy rotated my tires since the tread was wearing on the front unevenly. I was working on another car at the time and noticed after he was done that there must be a difference in the wheels. The tires only rub just a little if turned all the way so not a real problem since I only use the 928 once a week - My Porsche Friday.

Question: is the offset in the wheel or is there some kind of spacer I can remove and put on the other wheels in the back. Looks dam funny (front is now much wider than the rear) but seems to work for the sake of maximizing tire life.

I did see some threads talking about offsets.

Thought I would ask before jacking up and inspecting. I have 16" flat wheels, not phone dials.

I remember some members were questioning my wheels in one of my pics awhile ago and at the time thought I had the rears on the front, now it is really noticeable since the rotation.

Answers and suggestions are always appreciated.

Looks to me like you may have S4 wheels. The rears are 16x8" ET52.3 and the fronts are 16x7" ET65. It is easy to tell because the rear ones have a deeper "dish" shape (the edges of the wheel protrude further out than the center). You need to put the front and rear wheels back where they belong. If you have uneven wear issues with your tires, you need to get a proper alignment. A proper alignment is done after the car has been driven for a couple hundred miles. The car MUST NOT be lifted before or during the alignment, otherwise you will need to drive another couple hundred miles and re-align.

Wow, thanks. Just the corners are wearing due to turning I guess. Wear across the tread is fine. So the ET number is mm I'm guessing? So, about 1.5 inches difference each side.

I did notice the lugs sit deeper into the wheels - front to back. That means that no rotation of tires front to back. Isn't this a little strange? I looked for difference in depth of the dish before and there is no difference I could see. Could I have 4 of the same wheels? Maybe. Guess I will still be pulling them off.

Appreciate the aligning information. Good stuff to know. I remember reading something about aligning do's and dont's.

Used 928's are like a box of chocolates - never know what you are going to get, if you are a newbie like me.

Shoot, I think I have 4 front wheels on my car. All same dish depth and the depth is not that deep. WTF?

If lugs are deeper on one set than the ohter they are different widths and offsets. Look on the inside of a wheel for a stamp which indicates width and offset...

Can you post pictures of your wheels? It's hard to tell from your avatar.

Looks like your rears are on your fronts and vice versa. At least from the side shot in your avatar.

From the avatar pic it looks to me like he has 2 rears on the left side. No idea what he has on the right. Would probably be best for him to photo the wheels individually preferably with the stamped data on the inside. Then we could definitively determine what he has and where they should go.

I will post pics after this Saturday since that is my day on my buddies lift. The current avatar is before I rotated wheels and the back wheels were about the same width as the front when looking back at them from the front of the car.

After rotating a few weeks ago; the front wheels/tires stick out at least 1.5 inches further than the rear. Looks real funny as you could imagine.

Pcarfan said the same thing about rears on the front. I meant to check this awhile ago but got side tracked with blown hoses, idle and fuel leaks. Back on track now.

Pics of the wheel numbers. Looks like I do have 8 inch rear and 7 inch front but the offset is the same for both at 52.3mm. 928 registry.org lists only the 8 inch as 52.3mm.

Doesn't really matter. So S4 wheels on my car. Now I know.

I do have the rears on the front to maximize tire life for now. Next year I'll get some new shoes all the way around and move the rears back where they should be. My avatar is with rears on back and front in the forward position.

Been working on my paint. Was neglected when I bought the car last winter. Couldn't resist the sun and clouds reflection.

Also the engine is looking better and running better.

16x7 ET52.3 is very strange. Even S4's came with ET65 in the front. No 928 ever came from the factory with less than ET60 in the front. You should at least have the 7" wheels in the front and the 8" in the back.

Thanks for the info Dan. Were their other Porsche's with these dish wheels that had the marked ET in the front or....? Having the rears on the front for now shouldnt' cause any issues I think, I hope?

You may experience rubbing... if you get into the wrong situation, you could damage a front fender due to contact with the tire.

It has been quite a journey for me in the last 10 months on this forum. This is one of my first question threads and today another mystery for me is solved.

Front = 944 optional wheel
Rear = 928 S4 wheel

I finally stumbled upon a 944 forum thread where a member posted the p/n's for my front wheels and my rear wheels.

Front tire size, wheel & Part nr:

205/55R16 ET52.3-7Jx16 944.362.115

Rear tire size, wheel & Part nr:

225/50R16 ET52.3-8Jx16 928.362.117

944 Wheel Thread CLicky

End of story. Now I know.

Some mix ups happened when wheels were exchanged for chromed wheels unless the wheel guy was knows Porsche wheels well they might think ALL 7x16 dish wheels are the same.....
