Option #3: Greg Brown has a used stroker from a friend/customer's wrecked 928 that he is refeshening for $25k. That is big money but damn you would be in an elite group for 1/2 price.

Money is not the issue (I do ok), though nor am I going to be silly just to spend money. I want to build up a motor with s/c or turbo that puts out more power and I might even consider tracking the car in the future as I love race tracks. Currently I track my Ducati but would like to take the car for a go around the track. (yes I am changing and tuning the suspension before I get on the track, initially not o race others just test and tune laps)

Also probably a more important reason is it would be a side hobby to build up the second motor (new or with some rebuilt parts as well) out of the car and learn all about the motor in the process while still being able to drive my current car.

Anyone have opninions on NOS, 100shot wet on 130k mile (I know its not a lot of miles, once I finish seals and gasket replacements etc...), some say it is better to put that kind of load on the motor with NOS for short periods only when needed rather than supper charging and putting continuous load on the motor.

Ahhhh decisions...its fun...

If these engines have had there proper service they will last over 200k no problem as some of the members here have proven. I got 119k on my daily driver S4 and its just as strong as my 42k mile S4.

Thanks Dan...I appreciate the 42k to 119k comparison...that is helpful as I have never driven a low mileage one yet.

Is there a seal gasket kit anyone recommends, it was mentioned in this thread but I am not sure how extensive I should go with replacing gaskets etc...recommendations on what to replace would be helpful, I can do the work myself (in most cases) if I know what I need to replace (learning curve)..

thanks,...

I just want to make mention that these cars are getting to be over 25 years old and I have seen on some older 928's that the throttle isn't open full throttle even though the foot is to the floor. The throttle is operated by a cable that will stretch over time so if you car is feeling slugish that is the first thing to check. I had to adjust mine on my daily.

As for gaskets why not just replace what ever is leaking instead of doing a whole kit (thats major work). I can almost bet your cam gaskets are leaking so I would start with that and you mise well get the valve covers powder coated while your at is as well. Really cleans up the engine.

Thats what i did. I took the fire damaged motor i bought apart, machined the pistons to a lower CR and cleaned it all up. Its currently sitting in my garage attic in parts and baggys. The plan was to use it when my current 170k motor thats under boost finally decides to let go or fails a leak down....thing is, it hasnt yet!
One of these days i need to start building it up though...or at least start gahering seals..gaskets ..rings etc required for the rebuild.

thanks Dan, I will search the shop manuals for throttle cable adjustment just to make sure it is not an issue.

Also Tony I have been checking and it makes more sense to find a used one on the side and rebuild it over time for me after I complete all the basic maintenance I can on my current S4. Then add NOS as you did...

thanks...

The only thing that will really kill the 928 motor (short of a bearing on track) is the coating failing on the piston and then scratching the heck out of the cylinder wall. And this I would say 99% of the time would not be caught on a rebuild...

Unless you are planning giant boost, there's no compelling reason to rebuild your motor. Lot's of us have run moderate or more boost on unmolested stock motors with fairly high mileage without issues. Tony H, for example. Me too. Now, if you want to rebuild for the learning experience, have at it. If you are building for high boost, the rebuild would be different. Then there's the track - now you've opened up a real can of worms. it's not so much whether the motor should be rebuilt, but what you do to deal with fairly common oiling issues on the track. Only a rare few have escaped them and only a few have resolved them.
