Default no shift from 2nd to third...

Hello Fellow 928'ers,

I have an issue, I cannot get my 84 auto to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear, this issue started after I filled the tranny fluid myself. I backed the car up on ramps and filled the fluid, so it was not level, or maybe I put to much fluid in? I have had a cronic transmission leak since I have owned the car, I just keep having the fluid refilled when the transmission started slipping and was sick of paying someone $100 a crack to get it filled. Any advice on how I can get my upper gears back???

Step 1, Lay a nice flat concrete pad with 4-6" of concrete.
Step 2, purchase a nice 2 post hoist.
Step 3, install hoist.
Step 4, raise car and easily fix your leak.
Step 5, fill the transmission with the car running and in N. With the fluid cold, fill to the low level and cycle through the gears.
Step 6, lower the car, drive it around to get the fluid up to temp.
Step 7, raise back up on hoist and check/top up fluid.

Turns out I have the same issue... Checked my fluid, all seems well. Just will not go into 3rd gear. I can also get the tranny to slip if I hit the RPMs hard. Unfortunately I think your transmission like mine will need to be replaced.

I don't have the room for a two post lift. I would love one right about now.

Look forward to see what other have to say about this issue...

I was having this same issue and Darien just happened to be in town. With the part ordered from Roger, BradW's lift, and Darien's expertise, it was fixed in about 20 minutes total time. I have not had any problems since.

I was having similar shifting problems, although not quite the same. I replaced the B2 piston and adjusted the cable and all is good now.

Ok is the B2 piston problem an issuewith Lfare(increasing RPMs prior to shift) or one where the tranny will not shift into high gear, or both. It looks lik with an hour's worth of work, this might be something worth trying first....

Guess it is time to email roger...

This is great information! I had my mind set on a transmission replacement but sounds like a fairly simple fix. Does anyone know where I can get this MB replacement part? Would a dealer carry something like this or is it a online order? It is awesome how all of the people on Rennlist are willing to take the time to help out. Thanks for the posts!

I keep meaning to post a thread with details and pictures of my B2 piston problem, as it was not your standard broken B2 piston documented here. In my case the car would kinda get stuck in neutral between 2 and 3. A buddy told me this might be a sticking B2 piston, so I got the piston from Roger, and swapped it. Sure enough the plastic skirts of the piston were badly skuffed up, and this fixed it.
I would:
First: Adjust the Bowden cable, and if that does not help
Second: Replace the B2 piston.

Both are pretty easy. In my case I found it necessary to pull the pan down to do the B2 piston so I did a filter and pan gasket at the same time.
