Mel, I will let you know if there is any difference. I asked the counter guy if he had 15-50 Mobil. He said yea, but he's out till Tues. He had a whole rack of Royal Purple 20-50 so I asked him about it. His face lit up and he said Its the best oil he has ever used. He has some kind of suped up Ford F-150 and said that when he put it in, it transformed his truck.
I will let you know if it "Transforms" my 29 year old car. if I dont feel some type of difference or see some kind of milage difference then my research goes on.
Heck, I am a Freshly retired Scientist, I COULD do the research if I had a Laboratory.

My motorcycle forum I use for my FJR suggested this site and I have been using Shell Rotella T full synthetic for 60,000 miles. It is a commercial diesel oil. Any one have an opinion on this for the 928? This site has everything I wanted to know about oil. But then I am not that smart, yet.

BMW while I appreciate you digging that up, and it does have some decent data, there are two things that make it not as useful as I would like.
1. Amsoil came out on top. Amsoil to me is like a Amway of oil. So you have to know the seller to get your product then he is going to try to sell you some soap and vitamins so you have to be careful.
2. The test date was 2005. In 2005 Mobil 1 Gold cap 15-50 was easily available and a known quantity as far as quality.

Much has changed since then. I was racing road bicycles, Motocross, going to the track in my 2004 GT3, playing football with my buddies etc. We had a president who LIKED oil.

Now I have had ONE back surgery, looking at another with a discogram scheduled this Tuesday and I am pretty much a couch potato, and our president thinks oil is the Satan's Breath.

So much has changed. So I am guessing, as a scientist that, that data is old and not effective to todays conversation. But thats just my opinion. We need more current and up to date data.

I'm not looking for anything I can see / feel / notice about oil.

Just want to know the oil is clean, has a reasonable viscosity range and delivers steady gauge pressures, and has the appropriate additive package.

Am assuming synthetic oil has no recycled content, too.

But you never know with Branded products.
Blink your eyes and you find Hunt's tastes better, doesn't separate into two phases and invokes more anticipation as it heads towards your burger than Heinz. Who'd have thunk it?

For me I think its preferred to get something that's good oil of course, but also available in the 5 qt sizes. Instead of having to purchase individual quarts of oil. Call me spoiled, but that's my preference when dealing with multiple cars, two of which take almost 9 qts.

Went to my Autozone and they dont carry RP. Was this a attempt at humor?

I am running RP XPR in my 928, 20/50 I would not hesitate to use Amsoil, because I hear it has superior anti foaming qualities, and I have also heard that this is important in the 928.

No attempted humor, Autozone here in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma sells Royal Purple and has a sale price going. Local PCA member works there and called me when RP went on sale.

Like this?

Royal Purple 20W50, 5 Gallon Pail, $137.60 on Amazon
.

With Blackstone Labs, there is an oil testing lab available to all us. $25 per analysis, but if each of us had his or her oil tested and shared the results, we'd build a big database quickly.

I can never find the quality stuff that I see people (here) get at their local parts store. I have Autozone, Pepboys and some other store that has an even lower quality line. I think local managers have different product selections and YMMV. It has a lot to do with the area sales rep for a given product and whether he makes rounds at your parts store.

Damn, that's what I pay for it in bulk...... Might need to do some negotiation.
