My dad started me out in a 79 honda accord. He knew what type of son he was raising. It had about 75 hp and the first thing I did was go race my buddies v6 1996 mustang and lost. Still taught me how to row the gears tho.

Catfood, that sounds like what I learned on. A 73 Toyota station wagon with REAL simulated wood veneer stickers. It had a 4 spd that I could shift without using the clutch. Whicht was needed sometimes.
I dont know how we did it but all 5 of us crammed into the car and went to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and back in that thing. I was smitten by Las Vegas. Little did I know the Air Force was going to send me back out close to Vegas when I joined.

My 73 gran torino had a 400ci with a 4 barrell.
I use to park the car on a steep hill, put it in nuetral and let it roll back. Then I would rev it and drop it in gear. The car would roll backwards slowly and engulf the car in smoke!..........Then I dropped the u joints!
I prey my children are not like me! So far so good!

Maybe Jon will chime in with our 928 experience. Not sure if it was his first time to EVER drive, but it was pretty close if not... I think he was 14. Could not teach the manual thing unfortunately...he had to pick that up elsewhere. It was great for me and I think for him too! Remember those times with my dad as well...PRICELESS!

My dad said "You want a car? Get a job and buy one.", so my first was a very beat up and musty brown 1971 mercury cougar. This was in 1981, so the car had been through it.
Very comfortable and quite, but not a chick magnet and I needed all the help I could get.

Not so much a dad story, but when I was 14, and just before getting my learners permit, my mom took me to a an empty parking lot one night and I learned how to drive. This was in her white, 1 yr. old, manual, 924. My first car, that I bought at 15, was a '68 Mustang fastback with a 289($1800), wish I still had it.
For prom, my Dad loaned me his 4 year old, '83 Euro 5 spd. My best friend and his date didn't mind at all squeezing into the back seats!
Seems as if life was so much simpler then

I remember learning to stickshift in a 1946 GMC 1/2T pickup when I was 12-13 out in the boonies - grannie gear, double clutch or you will grind it! Now starting to teach my 19yr old daughter how to drive a stick.
My first car was a 1962 Olds Starfire I bought for $600. My dad payed for the parts to rebuild it, and I did the work on it, so lots of hands-on learning. That was always his way - learn by doing.

I was JUST THINKING THAT EXACT SAME THING an hour ago! Not high school, but the days right out of college...been in first job for 6 months or so...nice. I did realize even at the time how wonderful a time it was and was really not longing for the future in any way either... So, I guess I should be thankful that I have always looked at the good that has come with each day and each "season" of life... This current season the 928's have been the true blessing for me!

this is a 1982 928 with 220 hp. Its the least powerful car I own.
I think this 928 is a perfect car for a 16 year old who has his wits about him. My wife drove it for the first time and said she is happy with the decision. She doenst think he can get in to much trouble with it.
IF HE DOES, first time its GONE. Its MINE. So he only gets one chance. So he better have his wits about him.

FWIW, when I was 16 I got into trouble with everything I drove in or rode on. HP was not the issue...

The 928 is also built like a tank. It's wonderful driving a panzer...
