79 aftermarket stereo wont come out?
I picked up a Nakamichi MBV1 from a fellow Rennlister and started to take out my Pioneer DEH 3400 CD player Out of my 79 OB. Got the trim off but can't seem to get the head unit to come out. The drivers side is coming out but the passenger side seems hung up on something. I don't want to pull too hard but I can't see why it's hung up. I removed the "Master Caution" bar to make room -- as I thought it was hung up on that but it wasn't. Any ideas?

A GOOGLE search found the link to download the manual for the Pioneer DEH 3400 unit. Maybe there's info regarding your problem.

I would remove the side panel from the consol on the passenger side - 2 screws, 1 minute, and you have full access to behind, where you can just push it out or at least see what the hang up is.

Some of the DIN (standard box audio units) have catches that prevent removal. Look closely at the face of your unit and see if there are two small round holes in the face near each end.
If so, bend two pieces of coathanger or welding rod into U shapes with legs a couple of inches long. Push one into each pair of holes, and the unit will slide out.

A good shop will have used the factory brace/bracket at the back to bolt the stereo to. You can access it from the side panels as Ed mentioned.
If that is not it, then it's stuck to the chasis

Thanks guys. I never knew how easy it was to remove the carpet panels! It was a custom bracket screwed into the head unit. Looks like drivers side screw had worked itself loose but pass side was tight. Old Pioneer is out. Nak is in, but decided to have a pro wire it up. Since I took the interior apart and will put it back together they agreed to do the wiring for $75.00.
Here is a photo of it "pre" installed (not wired, screwed in yet). Sits nice and flush and looks fairly stock. Has two aux inputs and six disc changer in the head unit! These radios cost $1,200 when new so it's surly still going to sound good. I'm excited. Next step is new speakers.

I installed the same Nakamichi unit in my car, its great, no manually changing CD's.
The Nakamichi has great sound, you just have to go and round up some speakers to fit your car. I found some co-axial ones, IE tweeter built in with crossover, as the easiest way to upgrade the speakers.
The system works great. Only thing I am looking at now is adding a Bazooka self powered subwoofer to round out the bottom end.

I have an 1988 S4, I am not sure the speakers are the same as a '79 928.
I bought 4 inch Kenwood coaxial speakers (Model KFC-1062S) for the doors and disconnected the OEM door tweeters.
Plus 6 inch Pioneer coaxial speakers for the B pillars. I disconnected the small rear speakers in the very rear of the car and did not replace them.
Bought all the speakers from Best Buy.
All sound great, much better than the old OEM speakers.
Photo below of the door speakers.
