Hey Nicole, what do you mean by panel gaps? I have the entire interior removed, btw.

Also, I met a guy with an 84' silver shark in Santa Clara today that had been painted with a backyard job (his definition), and I certainly don't want it to look like that after the money I'm dropping. I think I'll ask to have the doors and handles removed now.

Panel gaps are the gaps between doors and body, fenders and hood, hatch and body, etc. If you don't take doors, hood, and hatch off, paint will spray into the gaps from outside, leaving a rough transition (like sandpaper). If you want a seamless paint job, these removable parts need to be painted separately. Hope this makes sense.

Perfectly. Thanks.

This is very cool! It's gonna look hawt when its done.

Both my front & rear bumpers have those chipping cracks as described by MrMerlin-likely from the mediocre respray it got at some point.

When I got there today, I found out that it hadn't been painted yet, but was scheduled to go in later today (done by now)!. Here are some pics I shot while it was finishing being masked: http://www.flickr.com/photos/trav_yo...7627047185208/

Ray, the painter, also told me that it took him a little while to figure out the paint mix. It turns out that my car had a pearl factory finish (an option in '79), something that none of us knew previously due to the paint's age. He took me over to the car, grabbed the sanded gas cap cover, wet it and took it into the sun. You could see the blues and purples in it and it's beautiful! That's the mix he's putting on the car. I drove all the way home smiling!

Black Metallic is a 3-stage paint? Or the base color metallic has pearl in it? Very interesting! Looking good!!

Are there any indications that this was a custom color paint job - either from the factory or through a prior repaint?

The back passenger-side quarter panel had some damage that was repainted once, but the rest of the car was original. The color that Ray found was all from option codes in the door panel.

Interesting! I would not have expected a regular metallic color to have this elaborate mix (for fear of repairability). But Porsche has surprised me before...

Here's a pic of the door panel from several years ago:

New pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/trav_yo...7626978528049/

Warning, car is covered in shop dust, so seeing what was really done is tough. Crossing my fingers that it comes out right.

Also, I've decided to have the painter paint the wheels at $50 a piece, but I do need to find the exact color --not sure if Wurth Silver is a good enough definition.

Also, I need a little advice. I was asked if I'd like to paint all the trim pieces the same color as the car (fragile) or go with "trim black". Suggestions? Even better, anyone do this and have pics?

DO NOT paint the trim in body color. It will not look good. The shapes of the windows are defined by the outer edges of the trim, not the glass!
