Your 84 S hasn´t the same exhaust as Bretts 86 S.

Any difference to the front muffler box?

Acc to PET its the same? Only the rear part of the system is different (S4 / GT style)

A few reasons.

Emission compliance (USA states are trending to exempt only if car is put on a restricted use license plate)
Sound suppression
Flow design for 300 hp
Durability / Original cats are heavy duty stainless steel
Cost --- they are "take-offs" sometimes available free.

I've lost power with this setup, but don't care. The double dizzy 5 speed still puts out more than I need.
