Default 84 cluster in an 82

Hey guys quick question. I know the speedo is the same in a us 82-84 but are the clusters interchangeable? If not can they be made to work. Most concerned with the alternator circuit that goes through the cluster.

Old hot rod saying about engine swaps might be appropriate - "Anything will go in anything, if you have a welding torch and a big-enough hammer."

Yep, can be done. Almost certainly will need to do some wiring changes, which will be made more complicated due to the crappy '84 wiring diagrams. You will need to use the '83 and '85 diagrams along with the '84 and '82 versions.

No, they are not directly interchangeable. The '84 has 14 wire connectors (X3) and the '82 has 3 12 wire connectors. Of course it can be "made to work" as Wally suggests, but you are going to need to do some serious rewiring as well as time spent with the '82-83-84 wiring diagrams....I spent several days cleaning up my wiring in this area, all the wires had been cut off in my '84, and I had an '82 cluster which I considered fitting.....not a good idea IMO.

I would not use an '84 cluster. The '84 circuit board is NLA, and it is not a direct fit/plug and play. Besides that the '84 wiring diagram is a freaking nightmare( especially for an electrical non-genius like me) as it has no wire colors on the diagram.
You would be better off buying a new circuit board for the '82 or finding a good used cluster.
