Default Imre,

Thought about that, but I don't have a length of hose long enough handy to try it. and the external pump and fiilter are on the bench right now......

Did you pull the internal pump yet?

Default No,

But that's the next thing up on the list. I stopped prior to that to avoid fumiing out the area for the time it was going to take to source the parts and find time to dig back in.
My guess would be it's really old now, and I know what to expect when it comes out.
On the lighter side, Parts are ordered as of this evening, and I should be operational at some point next week....assuming I can find the time to actually "get to it".

I have noticed that some new external Bosch pumps have a wire mesh covering on the inlet to prevent crap from jamming them. It is possible that you have one of those, and enough of the dead in-tank hose has crumbled and is now creating enough of a blockage to the external pump. Of course, the pump still sounds like it's running since it's not jammed up. It would be very easy to check this, all you need to do is squeeze the hose between the tank and the external pump shut with vise grips, then disconnect the hose from the pump. Some fuel will come out from the external pump side, but not much. You can then take a look at the external pump inlet to see if there is crap in there.

I like Dan's idea. We know the in tank pump hose crumbles--you could very well have enough crap lodged at the external pump to kill the fuel delivery...

Default UPDATE...Now I Have

Pulled and chucked in the garbage......where it's staying...RIP.
Classic failure.
Notwithstanding the completely unbelievable workmanship of the "Porche Tech" "I know these cars" in Montreal, (I would have done better work when I was 16 and didn't give a Sheet). at $125 per hour.......
New external pump, some evidence that someone had "been there" recently. (New hose clamp, new bolts etc.....)
Apparently Einstein didn't have a clue about the internal pump issues....hose clamp to the tank outlet was loose....no sign of any work on the tank fitting...etc. etc. etc. .....you really don't wanna know.
So, here's a shock, the 21 year old rubber hose had failed, and was most likely the reason for the original problem two years ago..and I've been "living on borrowed time". Thank God it didn't croak on the weekend up north with the wife...(It died about two hours after we got home)..I get enough grief about the car as it is.....
If you want visuals, check Andrew (AO) 's thread about "Never use the In-tank Pump" or, How to install the 044 upgrade...... My In-Tank unit looked almost identical to all the other "fail" pics posted.
In any event, new 044 installed with no in-tank unit. Rail pressure is back where it's supposed to be, and I'm not in Banner Elk.
On the lighter side, I've only got accolades for Roger and Tim Murphy. Both came through for me big time with the necessary parts to get this together. My own schedule being the problem here.

So did your external pump have a mesh that was blocked? Or was the in-tank pump seized?

Default Seized.

I didn't check the screening yet on the external unit. "Mechanic" stripped the negative terminal anyway, so it's garbage too., Pretty sure it's loaded with rubber debris.
