Default 86.5 A/T bent valves

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...item3cb773b883

Waller, TX

"Great body and interior, recent restoration. Car is complete. Ran great till water pump took out timing belt. Replaced timing belt and water pump (block not damaged) but when started, engine missing and running rough. Has bent intake and exhaust valves. Needs valve job and bent valves replaced. Odometer showing 79,000 but was not working when I bought the car less than a year ago."

No affiliation, someone save it.

It's already been discussed here from the Craigslist ad a week or two ago. I've looked at it. It's borderline whether the numbers work to save it. You have to pull the engine, then you have the head work, then all the "while you have the engine out" stuff, powerdercoating, labor, ads up quick. The pics don't show how messy the engine compartment really is, we're talking flaking Krylon from the intake in two colors no less. The odometer stopped at 79k 5 years ago, so could have 90k, could have 125k, who knows... Not saying I haven't considered grabbing this car as another project I don't have time for, but I don't think it's a great deal at $2800. If this car was running good and drivable, it would go for what, 6-7k?. (paint is decent but not great shape, tear in driver's seat)

Well, I am discussing it with the owners now to buy it. I have an s4 engine that I will either sell to fix this one or just use my s4 engine in the 86. We shall see if it works out...

Thanks for the heads up. I actually saw it on CL and then watched the auction and just called them. Not sure how much shipping is going to be.

I like how they say the car is restored. What's restored? The paint looks average, the interior is in decent shape but there are certainly better examples out there. The engine is broken. What exactly is restored on this car?

That is a very good question. Of course, I have a parts car that has everything that this thing will ever need. Not to mention I put 370k miles on an 83s, so this one doesn't scare me even if it has 125k miles. Have you guys priced an 86 1/2 lately that run well? So, when I pull the engine, I will have that engine bay looking like a new car when it goes back together. Put that together with that interior and this is going to be a nice car. The car looks average because it is dirty and the digital pics are not very good. I am so gratefull that no one bid on it.

Thanks,

Frank,

My comments were from seeing the car in person, not the photos. There's some small rust spots on the driver's door just below the window, but isn't the door aluminum? O well, looks like rust, paint flaking up. Just below the rust spots, the paint has a bit of a haze, like overspray, may buff out. Lots of swirls and scratches. The car runs, but real rough and you can't really keep it running without almost full throttle. Glove box door is warped. Defrost vents not seated in dash. Original shifter is broken, but functional.

If you make a deal, talk to me about a replacement driver's seat. If you want to buy it, I could put it in the car before it leaves the Houston area. I have one that is better than the one in the car, that I will be selling. I may not sell them as a pair because I want to make furniture out of the passenger seat.

Also, if you buy it, before you do anything, pull the timing belt covers, turn the crank to TDC and see if the cam gear marking line up. Highly unlikely it lost a belt without bending valves, but slight possibility it did and the guy put the belt on wrong. He's a mechanic but doesn't seem to know much about 928's.

Thanks Don. Yes, I made an offer and it was accepted. I am going to pull the engine out of the s4 this next week and go through it. New bearings, rings, seals etc... Then, I intend to use the long block from the S4 with the 86 intake stuff. I will take time and do it rignt. I will replace all hoses, sensors etc... I figure that since I have almost everything It needs, even if it has to be resprayed, it is still one hell of a deal for a nice 86.5. So, I am interested in your seat. What kind of deal can you make? my email is fbarnhill@yahoo.com. That is the best way to reach me. What I was thinking was to put my lipstick red interior in it. The only things that are red are seats, carpet and the door panel inserts. But if you have a nice seat, that would be great. The thing is that I could care less about the engine because I have one that I know is good. am so looking forward to it. I won't finalize the deal for 2 weeks. Going to put my 79 on ebay next week.
Is there anything you need for your project that I may have on the 88?

Don, I didn't even realize that you have an 86.5. How do you like it? I hope to have the $$$ to also get the Porken chips, xpipe and rmb for mine. Also, I hope to use the H5 headlights from the S4 on it if I can figure out how. Man, I would love for you to send me some pics of your car. Those wheels look awsome but I can't get much from your avatar.

Thanks again,
Frank

Frank,

Congrats on the car. I was considering making a low ball offer for it, and have talked to the owner a few times, but my take was he wouldn't go as low as I wanted him to. My wife will be happy you made a deal before I did. Glad it will be going to a good home and won't be parted out. You should start a thread about it when you start working on it.

I'll email you some pics of the seat, which is still in the 89 I'm working on, and try to decide on a price for the seat including me taking it to the car in Waller. It's got some wear but no holes or tears. I bought the seats from the 88 my new engine came out of that only had 59k, so there's less wear on them.

I love my 86.5. I've had it for 16 years and it's been a truely great car. It's never been down for more than a day or two, and never left me stranded. My kids have grown up with it and we used it a lot with the entire family when they were smaller, so it's part of the family and I can't imagine parting with it. The chip, xpipe, no-cat combo is awesome and the car has all the power I need or want. I'll try to dig up some more pics of it as well. If you don't hear from me for a day or two it's because I'm scrambling to get my 89 finished up and running (could be cranking it up tonight).

Don, man that sounds great. Best of luck on getting the car started. I am going to start the process of pulling the engine on the 88 this weekend. I am going to use the 88 long block with the 86 intake and FI stuff. I am also going to put the lsd from the 88 in there. I guess then it will be time for the 88 to go away. I flinch every time I look at it burned like it is.

Frank, how did this work out? Did you get the car shipped? Any progress on the bent valves? Were you happy with the purchase?

It may be a bit late to contribute to this thread.. but the 86 intake will not bolt onto S4 heads - the S4 intake ports in the heads are ovalled in the other direction to the early 32V heads.

Hey guys,
Yes I got the car, the engine from Mark at the nine source and am in the process of getting it back together. It is slow going but I am trying to just get it orginized at this point. The car is a little rougher than I had hoped but I think will be a nice car by the time I finish with it. Don, the scratches are comming right out with a little buffing, the front spoiler is perfect. The interior is very nice except for a hole in drivers bolster. However, no belly pan, no cooler hose to the Alt so no sensor in the hose either. I will take my time and do it right. I am going to replace the rod bearings and possibly the mains. I am going to measure the end play on both engines first. (the origional and the one I got from Mark.) So, I am very happy with the purchase. I have always wanted an 86.5. I would have preferred a 5 speed but with my bad knees, the auto will have to suffice.

Hilton, I sold the 88 s4 to Mark Benton and got a low mileage 85.5 engine from him. It has everything I need to get this thing running well. I also kept the LSD from the 88. So, with a rebuilt engine, hopefully an x-pipe, porkensioner, porktimer, porkclamp and porken chips, I hope to have this thing purring like a kitten.

We shall see.
