Default 928 stood 5 months, no fuel gauge reading ?

Just wondered if anyone can pinpoint why my Fuel gauge might be inoperative ,it does,nt register at all.., it was ok before the lay up.
Cleaned and checked the connections on the sender plug, and they are fine.
Any info greatly appreciated.

This is the first time in many years of winter storage that this has happened.., I usually run the car up to temperature once a month, but this year I let her stand after reading advice on here that it was better ?

Your fuel sender is sticking. Either repair or replace. Mine is doing the exact same thing after sitting only 5 days.

...., thank,s for the help everyone, yes, there,s just over half a tank full in there.., the additives you mention are,nt available UK. There are fuel injector cleaners that add to the tank, octane boosters, STP and Wyns etc, but non of the one,s you mentioned.
Would any of these be suitable ?
I,ve just added a gallon to see if that would move something in there, but no luck.

Find the pages of snakeskin here - he has some great pics of how to clean the sender works. The wires can get deposits on them that stop it working.

Mine does the same thing if I let her sit for too long, a good bumpy road usually fixes it.. someday I will get around to fixing it.

Your float may be sticking. Look under the carpet on the right hand side of your hatch. You will find a large plastic plug. Remove it. Underneath the plug you will find a threaded plastic ring, a plug and a hose. Disconnect the hose and plug then unscrew the plastic ring. once you do this, you can pull the sender out of the tank. Soak it in carburator cleaner overnight. At the bottom of the sender there is a small threaded stud sticking out through the plastic with a nut. Use a 5.5mm socket and carefully remove this nut. You may want to scrub the varnish off of the stud first to avoid breaking the fragile and thin stud. Once the nut is removed you can remove the plastic sleave at the bottom. This will reveal another nut of the same size. Once this second nut is removed you will be able to disassemble the rest of the sender in order to clean it. Be carefull of the three tiny filaments inside. These are what are used to read the fuel level and turn on the low level light. DO NOT BREAK THEM. Us ethe carb cleaner to clean the gunk off of the metal rod that the float slides upon.

I,ve taken the sender out of the tank ( gas almost to top) when you turn the sender upside down and back again you can hear/feel something sliding up and down inside the tube of the sender, is this normal, or has something come adrift ? before I take it apart. That tiny little nut on the bottom sure looks like it,s looking for trouble if it,s disturbed ?

FYI.., I seem to have fixed the problem, I took the sender apart and discovered the long internal wire that controls the fuel gauge had snapped off at the brass contact strip, soldered it together, and now my gauge works as it should.

Thanks everyone who posted

I know this post is from well over 10 years ago, but I want to thank you for the advice. It worked absolutely perfectly. The main thing to clean are those very tiny filaments. I just used my fingernail to get a little bit of rust off them. Thanks again!
