Default Need Advice on Spare Parts for SITM

Hi All -

Excited that my car is coming together so that myself, my 8yr old and 12yr old should be able to come to SITM.

I could use guidance on the "Must Bring with You Spare Parts" on a 928 Road Trip.

Advice is welcome ; beer is probably already accounted for

Thanks!

That would really depend on what shape your car is in.
But in any case, a lot of cash and a CC.

Duct tape, spare relays and the afore mentioned credit card.

Fantastic advice. I don't know you but I've seen those that do sometimes say, "A$$"

Maybe I'll focus on bringing a relay bypass jumper, a few spare relays, possibly a cheapo ground strap and a persistent internet connection so I can seek out more great advice on this thread

More details, photos, and PO's history if you have it so the advise can map properly.

I probably should have simply asked,

"If you were going on a road trip, what spare parts would you take?"

I didn't mean for this to be any more complex than that. As for history on the car...

- Thankfully every receipt since inception
- Engine/TT completely rebuilt 50K miles ago. 1990 S4 now has 147K miles.
- Grounds Serviced in last 5-6 months
- Rubber Fuel lines replaced using Rogers kit in the last 1000 miles
- TB/WP/Porkensioner/PKlamp performed yesterday (all belts, hoses, spark plugs, etc replaced)
- Transmission service due on one of the four next weekends. As is flushing of the PSD

Needs Oil Pan, Motor Mounts, PS Sorting but that won't happen before SITM

Not sure what trans service looks like, but that always scares me prior to a trip. Be very selective who does that work and consider postponing it. Or, do it sooner rather than later and put some pre trip miles onto the car.

I'd buy the cheap little power steering pump kit and that one atmospheric supply hose and a new reservoir if its leaking up high and do that work first. Only if its leaking.

(edit/porkensioner --- won't need kempf on the road)

Tow hook & AAA membership.
Maybe a full sized spare strapped under the hatch area.

Thanks, Chris. Maybe I'll wait on replacing Trans/Diff Fluid and Filter.

Great list. I have the Kempf tool but also have a Porkensioner so I was under the impression I didn't need to re-tension.

When you said hoses, did you also replace the short hose at the heater valve?
That's a PITA if it breaks on the road due to variable diameters.
There are a couple of other long hoses behind engine, too, for heater.
I've got spares I carry, but so far haven't had one break.

Yeah, I edited that while you were formulating a reply.

The other road issue I've seen happened to CPayne.
He was running with us on the parkway last fall.
His plug wires, especially coil wires, were very old and arcing.
He aborted and barely limped home, basically feeding four cylinders worth of gasoline into the cat for 80 miles. Wish we had some spare coil wires on the road that day.

Look at the car on a lift, rubber exhaust hangers are prone to fail on a big trip... Belly pan attachment points are important, it is hard to get under there if things start hanging low on the road.
Have a relay and fuse chart, and spare fuses/relays especially a fuel pump relay. Check your space saver spare to see if it holds air, and your compressor to see if it will pump it up. I have only needed it once, but it all worked.
I put a lot of Rain-X on all the windows before the trip.
Bring a bucket with your wash stuff for when you get to the hotel.
Sunblock and an umbrella.

Stuff for the kids so they don't get bored and start inventing games that might spook the other owners! I had to put a stop to "ice cube catapult" at Frenzy a couple years back!

I think he was hoping that I'd be there for the "Cash Bar"
