The basic underlying principle of all road trips is that whatever parts you have, won't be needed; and conversely, whatever goes wrong, you won't have parts for.

So, as mentioned, cash, a credit-card and a AAA-plus card are potentially the most useful items, and easiest to pack.

And of course make sure the basic systems are all in good condition, and refreshed as needed.

Engines need air, fuel and spark to run. Air is pretty reliable, fuel not so much: '90 S4's came with the second in-tank fuel pump, that is the only thing that ever stopped us on the road (thankfully within AAA-plus distance of home), so I am sensitive to it (story here). If your car still has the in-tank pump then I would definitely get it out for a careful inspection. For a stock S4 I would suggest replacing it with the strainer used on earlier cars.

Ignition is also pretty reliable, except for the afore-mentioned aging wires and connectors. If they haven't ever been changed, then I would definitely do that.

The LH processor is also subject to sudden death, the original "hybrid" circuit inside degrades with age. Not common, but happens. We have a JDS-rebuilt LH, which replaces that circuit, but still carry a spare in case someone else needs it.

Thank you everyone.

I guess the odd's of overcoming adversity increase when there are SO many knowledgable parties in the same place.

Truly looking forward to meeting the folks behind the keyboards!

Maybe I'll focus on bringing a relay bypass jumper, a few spare relays, possibly a cheapo ground strap and a persistent internet connection so I can seek out more great advice on this thread
This guy is going to fit in just fine I think.

It seems that you hav4e been driving the car and have had others look at the car and it is road worthy at this point.
I would take some hand tools, some relays, jumper wires, a DVOM and the wiring diagrams/WSM loaded on a laptop.

The last two years I brought all the above, a spare LH and MAF, this year I may not bring any of it, just beer and bail money.

My time-tested theory on 'what should I plan to have to fix on the road?' turns that same list into 'What should I fix before I hit the road?' Worried about relays? Change them now, in the comfort and convenience of your own garage. Ditto fuel filters, belts, transmission fluid, brake pads, light bulbs, tires, whatever. OK, maybe not light bulbs. But you get the idea. Do it now, enjoy the ride.

That is a good plan.
I would not leave with a known problem.
Some days you just run out of time.

Wow. Am I the only one that just drives the car? If I want to go to Atlanta from Iowa, I fuel up and go. Ditto for California, Texas, Ohio or any other trips I have done. I don't think twice about a 10 hour or more trip in my shark. We go so slow in this country we are barely taxing these cars. They might as well be idling at the freeway speeds we have.

Just keep up on the scheduled maintenance (and our known age related items) and go.

It's just a car. If it doesn't make it, have it shipped/towed home, rent a car and keep on keeping on to your destination.

Worrying about it to no end will make your trip hell.

Bumping this for any first time travelers in their 928s headed to SITM.

I posted this as I was headed out for my first year. Needed to replace the Fuel Pump relay to crawl home from the event.

Looking forward to packing the car in a few hours and can't wait to see those of you I've met and those I have not
