$525 to replace a seatbelt? Does this sound right?
So the retraction mechanism on my passenger side seat belt is broken, not allowing the seat belt to retract back to it's original position.
I sent the car to my shop that has done most of the work on the car and they quoted me $270 for the part from Porsche and then 3.5 hours of labor.
Both of those seem high and not right. Like I said it's just the retraction mechanism.
Advice? Comments?

Well, I can supply you a seat belt for a lot less than that! Shoot me an email at mark@theninesource.com if you happen to be interested in a good used PS belt.

I have not changed one but that seems way way high.
maybe $50 labor at the most. is shouldnt take more the 10 min, but I have never done it so I'm not sure.
Brad
BTW did they ask you to bend over?
I would be looking for another shop.

The problem is you are taking your 928 to your Ferrari mechanic.
Don't do that.
This is a DIY forum.
The questions you should be asking are:
1. Where can I buy a seatbelt assembly?
2. How do I replace the seatbelt assembly?

The Porsche website shows EUR 146,38 for a new belt (I suppose including the winding mechanism). So including shipping and converting that to US$ should be about $250-$270 so that sound right. It is cheaper to get a good used one.
3.5 hours for labor sounds high, but the quarter panel does needs to come off. If they haven't done this before and need to search for the screws, 3.5 hours sounds right. If they have done this before 1 hour should do it. There is a good writeup somewhere on this board you might supply them with to cut time. It is way cheaper to do it yourself and it isn't difficult.

Where did I say I was taking my car to a Ferrari mechanic? Actually the car is at a shop that specializes in Porsche. I have been taking the car there since I bought it.

ferraristyle,
Which shop in NYC are you using? Would be interesting to learn who's available in our area. I did PPI and TB at Formula Motorsports in Long Island City; the rest of the work I've been doing (or planning to do) myself.
P.S. In case you do decide to the work yourself and would like a company, feel free to drop me a line.
Cheers!

Here's a smiley.
Some folks seem to need them or else they automatically misinterpret the intent of a comment.

I have done this, and it took a lot longer than 3.5 hours, the rear panels have to come off.
Sounds very fair to me, they are a bitch to get set up, a slight misalignment and they will not work.

One of my retractors stopped working and once I got the panel off, I found some small bits of plastic had jammed the retractor. Cleaned it out and its been working ever since.
I can't remember where the bits of plastic had come from, but no issues since.
So I would inspect the retractor and see whats going on before I spent that kind of money on a new one.
