That information is in the Owners Manual, which you can find online courtesy of AO at https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...al-online.html

NOPE....there is no brain for the automatic except for the driver's....old three speed stated 2 nd used up to 95 MPH only shift down to 2 nd at speeds below 80 MPH......

it is indeed listed in the owners manual or:
put gear lever in 2 position and with engine running floor the gas pedal. when the engine rev counter nears the red portion get ready to shift and just before the limiter move said lever to 3 position.
repeat for D and hang on

You can also shift it manually by letting off slightly as you move the lever from 2nd to 3rd and back to 2nd swiftly. The result is a quick smooth shift from 1st into 2nd at whatever RPM you are at. If you don't resellect 2nd it will shift from 1st. to 3rd..

On my 88, if you start in position '2' it uses 1st gear, but then you can move to position '3' anytime and it will go to 2nd gear. It will not move on to 3rd gear until it is ready, which depends on throttle and speed.

Mine does that, and it is exactly what I expect. Position 2 allows/forces a first gear start. Move selector to 3 allows shift to second gear, then progressively to third gear depending on engine load and throttle position.
Sean's car has a PKS, so his will hold the individual gears longer than my feeble '89 with shorter legs but slack TV cable and no PKS. I use first gear to get out of my driveway, but in traffic it's pretty much a waste of time. The car rushes through first so quickly under full-throttle that it's hardly worth the effort. MHO, anyway.

Well Bob, I also learned that on this car it is better to use *either* PKS *or* manual shifting. Using both can yield some interesting results in the 2-3 area so I just don't. If I want to get 1st gear starts most of the time, I flip the PKS on. If I just want a one-shot deal where the car acts like a manual, then I shift it manually. I think the fastest standing start in an S4 auto can be achieved using manual shifting, there is no lag of any kind in the transmission that way.

I think the only time the tranny should go to 2nd when 3rd is selected is if you're at WOT.

Here is what my car does:
My car holds first gear as long as I can get traction and have the accelerator floored before I get to about 5k. If I am ripping the tires loose and cannot get the car to hook and the tires are really cooking, then my transmission shifts into 2nd before I want it to and before I even move the shifter. I am guessing this is because the bowden cable is not all the way out due to the fact that I cannot floor the accelerator yet. If all goes well, and traction holds and I can floor the pedal before 5k or so, then the car will hold to 6200. Then I shift to 3 and then immediately back down to 2. Now the car will hold 2nd gear to 6200 or so, until I go to 3, and then 4. You are going really fast at that point.

My 89 S4 is completely stock.
Starting from a stop in 2 and flooring it, it will shift out of first around 5900 (70kph). As long as I keep it floored I can shift to 3 and the tranny will hold 2nd grear until 6200 before shifting up (117kph). I have never tried to hold it to redline in 3rd, but I expect it would again shift around 6200 somewhere around 190-200kph.
