Default Yeah, Im gonna get flamed for asking this question.....

Hey guys,

Ok, I have been reading through the exhaust threads, but I cannot get a definitive answer. My car is an 84, so I dont have the cool 32V motor. Basically I want my exhaust note to sound like..........(Yep, yall are gonna make fun of me). The 928 in Risky Business or even Weird Science.

My car is completely stock....It sounds like a Ford LTD, LOL.

Can someone give any tips on what I can do to achieve that sound? I dont want the gurgle of a V8, but more exotic like the ones in that movie. Which I am sure were probably dubbed in.

Anyway, any thoughts guys?

Thanks

I gutted my cats. Cheap and effective. Sounds throatier and revs a bit quicker, but stinks and leaves black residue on my bumper. Always an option.

The other members will know where you can pick up an addition to your exhaust to make it sound better.

According to the sound guys from the movie, the exhaust was stock and the muffler (stainless steel mind you) had a rust hole in it. So go rust a hole in your ss muffler and it will sound the same... lol

Search for "Risky Business" you'll find the thread eventually. There was a guy, that talked to a guy, that was trying to find the original car from the movie. The 5 speed car in which Tommy learned how to drive a stick.

Dennis has the Borla exhaust on his Weissach Edition and it's pretty amazing. My crap camera doesn't do this car justice by any means. This just reaches out and punches you in the chest when it raps up. Idle is nice and calm though.

My opinion when you start hacking off mufflers, it's starts to sound like a hillbilly and his Camaro... I agree the Risky Biz ar sounds pretty bad ***. Just my opinion.

Some say the 16v motors have a better exhaust note, so just because you don't have that 32v isn't necessarily a bad thing.

85-86 tubular manifolds and an X-pipe will both liven up the engine an give a bit more of an exhaust note.

Here is my 79 with MSDS headers with a single 3" open exhaust - no muflers.

I thought it was common knowledge that wasn't the 928's exhaust note in the movie.

I was just going by what I read on here. I have no factual evidence to back up anything this thread shows, I was actually kinda joking about rusting a hole in a ss muffler. lol

It was started by "bran3b" as a thread titled, "Risky Business 928" and has 95 posts...

Cut and pasted...

Hey guys, got another email from Mr Johnson. Finally we have an answer to one of the greatest rumors in Risky Business 928 lore! Read below:

hi,

I noticed that many people think the car sound was from a Ferrari. This is not true. the sound was dubbed, just as in any movie, but it did come from a 928 that had a hole rusted in the muffler. If you want a car that sounds like the RB then drill a hole in your rear muffler.

The statements on the Internet about the Ferrari sound is not correct. Again, I have searched the production files with my own two hands. I have also viewed all of the raw film footage from the movie and I have been through the wardrobe, props, etc. Jon Avnet, the guy who produced RB, is helping me. I don't have to guess anymore.

If you guys want to know anything about the cars, just email me through my web page at rb928.com

To those who think it's stupid to have found the car, keep in mind that I bought the car from an unknowing person for $5200. I have already had unsolicited offers as high as $50k and many movie car collectors have told me that I will likely get 200k at the Barret Jackson auction. Although, at this point, I don't know if I will sell it or place it in a museum in Highland Park, IL

Time of your life heh kid?

Hacker, please excuse my ignorance, but why do you do a little tap on the gas in between the gears? Double clutch? That's what it sounds like. Benefits?

I'm a drag racer not a road racer, so I guess I'm just a little curious.

Thanks,
Trip..

You do it on downshifts so the engine RPM is closer to what it needs to be so it limits the amount of engine braking that happens as you let out the clutch. Very important if you happen to be cornering braking at/near the limit. Keeps your rearend from coming around your front end If the second gear syncros are weak then double clutching reving it in neutral with the clutch pedal up helps match the gear speeds. Besides it sounds way cool When you are blipping it with the side of your foot as you are braking and working the clutch and turning !

The answer I rotate between when asked:

1. See Jim Bailey's answer
2. Synchro's are worn
3. That's how Steve McQueen drives in Bullitt - sounds cool
4. It scares the crap out of 911's

No 4 is a really good reason to fit side exhaust so you can say hello as you get next to them

Your guys crack me up.

Thanks for the info. Although Borla only shows their exhausts up to 1982. Nothing for a 1984.

I guess I will have to look around.

Any other thoughts?

IMO the best exhaust for the money is 85/86 manifolds, 3" exhaust with two straight through mufflers.

Not only sounds great, it will add power over the stock manifolds & CATS.

Next step is headers.

The front straight at Road America is almost a mile long with concrete on both sides. I like passing on the right so the exhaust hits them directly, then bounces off the wall.

Agreed, Dennis has one of my favorite exhaust notes. I followed him though the mountain twisties to SITM two years ago and I still can't get over that sound. It's definitley one of favorites.

Also, Rhudy's (camboinc) sounds like somebody put Satan in a blender. It's scary just to listen to.

And Sterling's, is just plain ridicilous (in a good way).

Number 3, haha!

Ever watched "Vanishing Point" There is a shot of him double clutching that is faster than most people can powershift, I had to watch it a couple times and go frame by frame on my Blu Ray player to see it. Simply amazing.
