new and old key blanks interchangeable ?

Default new and old key blanks interchangeable ?

my 81 has the small black key with the crests missing works perfectly but was thinking of ordering an original blank i fancy the newer bigger red key is the working end of the key the same through the model range or different?

As far as I know the only difference is in the length of the key shaft. The longer shaft is for cars with factory alarm systems. The longer shaft engages the tumbler that activates the set/cancel contact for the alarm system.

contact these guys - keys4classics.com in Australia - they will maker you perfect keys from a photo - and probably much cheaper than a UK key cutter.

Their current prices for 928s are: $39 short and $45 long for alarm - note different blanks for alarm or not.

FWIW I got my long one cut in the UK for $30 from www.keysinthepost.com thru eBay

+1 for keys4classics.com They did mine cheap, fast and from an emailed photo. It worked better in all locks and ignition than the ole worn one.

They can supply the keys cut on original blanks from the OEM supplier to Porsche. Those keys are "original." They also have non-OEM blanks available for a lower price.

Don't have a pic of mine but it was identical to the original. Keep in mind it doesn't come with the plastic head, just the metal key shaft. Big three has the handles.
