There is a vinyl surround that houses the clock and rear A/C controls (if your vehicle has this option) which is removed in a similar fashion. There is also a plastic plate with the shifter boot - this can be removed when you gain access to the backside of the console as there are two levers that secure this piece within the console. I am going from memory here so perhaps someone that has done this more recently can confirm?

Thanks Frank. I am thinking about taking apart the top of the console for cleaning to get some dust and crumbs out of that area. I do recall hearing about two metal tabs that actually lock the shifter plate to the console frame.
