I think it must have sat in the desert for the past 30 years...

It's a dry heat in the desert, acts as a preservative.

Well at least the seller isn't asking $10k for a car that doesn't run and has been sitting for a decade.

It's about 20 miles from me. I'd recommend putting gasoline on the paint. It will bring out the shine. Then again my area has the highest average gas price in the state regardless of what AAA says about San Fran being the highest. I'd light her up!!!

As long as the remaining paint is thick enough, yes. We've seen some heavily oxidized guards red car look pretty nice after a good buffing.

That level of oxidation on guards red can indeed be buffed, if the paint is still the original (seems likely).

See this one:

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=65245

A quick run with some 2000 grit paper, then a high-cut high-gloss polish (not cutting compound - too abrasive), and it'd look very presentable.

Further correction with finer grades of polish and so on would end up with a car that looks like James' Euro 85

(if you're considering buying this one, don't test the pain while the owner is there.. you might convince him to polish it and raise the asking by $2k - just look carefully at the rubber beading, window seals/trim, wheel arches, brakes and suspension for overspray and if none, assume its original paint)

Guards red is a single stage paint and is extremely durable....but the car in your pics looks like it has peeling clear coat...sign of a crappy repaint.....

No rubs, no sunroof, rear wiper delete, 5 speed. I'd hit it.

SLO isn't the desert, it's a beach town. And this one has been for sale on and off for a couple of years. With no change in the price.

I have detailed many old cars and have a really good buffer. In many cases you can get one last hurrah out of badly oxidized paint. One RS America in Guards red went from nasty to looking nice. But if left in the sun much it will soon fade again. Resprays usually do not have the material to do all that much with and now are often clear coated as well.

Oh that is ugly.....no amount of buffing is going to fix the rear window channel rust....I hate rust.
