Who all is from Michigan?
My introduction;
My name is Chad, but only my Mother calls me that. To everyone else I'm Trip. I am 35 and I live in Ypsilanti about 5 minutes from Ann Arbor, which is about 30 min from Detroit.
I am just looking for local guys to introduce me to the world of the 928 and perhaps talk a little shop while knocking back a Wobble Pop. I am a quick study and I don't ask alot of questions. I learned a long time ago it's better to keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut, you'll learn more that way!
I see there is a get together on the second Thursday of every month in Novi *Edit* Royal Oak, not Novi** and a big get-together in Hell. Sounds like fun.
I haven't bought my first 928 yet, but I'm on the lookout for one. Preferably an 83-84S in the $3,000 range. I have more to spend, but I would like to keep a stash for repairs and whatnot. I am pretty decent with a wrench, but this will be my first endeavor with a Porsche and I would really like to have some idea of what I may be getting into. I've played with a few Beetles, one with a Bradley body. Everything else has been GM, primarily 3rd and 4th gen F-bodies, but there were a few 66-69 Chevelles and a 70 SS El-Camino in there with a 70 Nova and whatnot.
Is there such a thing as swap meets for 928 parts or are they a bit more dignified/sophisticated than that? I have restored a few cars and I know swap meets can be a great source for decent parts at garage sale prices. Or am I best left to the mercy of the retailers? I'm not a big fan of Fleabay/Evilbay, but if there is no other alternative...
I took my first step and ordered a 928 International catalog, well, 4 years ago, So after 4+ years of debating, I decided to finally buy my dream car. Now I come to you guys. I've spent the last 12 hours reading here and I think I'm going cross-eyed, this place has a wealth of information and if a feller isn't careful, he may learn a thing or two!
Looks like a great place to learn from and if you guys don't mind, I may ask a few questions along the way If you guys have any questions for me, shout 'em out.
Thanks for your time,
Trip..

I graduated from Pioneer High and moved across the street to U of M. Lived for a short while in Ypsalanti. My first ride in a 928 was around Michigans campus in 1983. I'm long gone but have seen many Rennlisters from your area posting including Andrew who has answered many of my questions posted. You will have alot of support in that area.
Good luck

Thanks! I hope to come your way when I have an interior that's in shreds! Do you by chance do anything with the "Psycho" seats? That really is my favorite of all the interiors.

FLINT!!! There is NOTHING in Flint unless you are in home demolition! There is nothing but crime and drugs in that town since GM pulled out (unannounced) and moved to Mexico.
Best of luck to ya!

Hey Trip, welcome.
You'll be in good hands up in there in Michigan with that crowd, as long as they don't bust out the llama.
I'd advise you purposely *not* to buy a 928 until after you've met these guys at the beer night and seen their cars, gotten edumacated and some 1st hand perspective. Don't worry about showing up driving one, you'll be waaay better off holding off for a while and finding a great deal on the right car with the guidance of the MI crew. Right now you couldn't possibly even know what the right car is... a lot of crappy cars, ticking timebombs and possible pitfalls out there.
I had an '83 5speed and loved it, wish I could have kept it...
Wish you the best in getting into 928 ownership!

Right now I'm trying to decide between pinstripe or psycho in my 91 928.
I ordered some black/white psycho and black/white pinstripe material. When it gets here, I'll decide.
Interesting term "Psycho". I knew what you meant right off. I expect it will stick. It's better than trying to explain to a layman what Pasha (Pascha) is.
Much easier to say "psycho seats" than trying to describe wing patterns of Mediterranean butterflies in Portuguese.

There are a great bunch of 928 owners in the Detroit/Michigan group. Our un-elected, but accepted fearless leader is AO, along with Rob Budd, Dennis, DaveK9 and other extremely knowledgeable people who gather in celebration of anything. They will help you, as they have me, enjoy and appreciate the 928, but more importantly...the friendship and camraderie that comes with owning one. Best wishes on your search and I agree with meeting and seeing the other member's vehicals before pulling the trigger on purchasing one.
