Yes first was syncromesh. If you have grinding when you try to go from neutral to first it is possible the clutch is not disengaging completely. Usually second geari s the one that has worn out syncros from downshifting at speed or drag racing forced shifts up to second. One seldom needs to drop into first unless you have come to a full stop.

I may be wrong on this and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am, but if you are looking for the entire mirror assembly you may want to be careful, as I believe the angle the mirror sets at is different between right and left hand drive cars. If you put a US mirror on a right hand drive car you may not be able to get it adjusted correctly.

yes i am getting grinding if the car is even rolling a little, only happening in 1 st no other problems with the gearbox other than this but funny you should mention the adjustment. i adjusted the clutch at the peddle this evening because i was starting to get clearance issues on my way home this evening .i haven,t driven the car since this adjustment so this fault may be cleared i,ll know in the morning.many thanks for your reply james.....mark

had thought of this one simon, i also think there may be a magnification difference because of the distance from the mirror.but my car is a german import into ireland so LHD, so the US one should be perfect any idea what to paid for a used one?

Your door lacks the internal bracket to which the factory mirror mounts.....take off your current mirror to see how it is attached, it is not simply screwed to the sheet metal.

i suspected there was a steel bracket inside the door but felt even if this was welded to the US spec door that i could make up the bracket needed?you were correct on the clutch clearance issue causing what i thought might have been a synco problem with 1st.can now select 1st rolling from 2nd the box is perfect.
