Projector Headlights ... revisited

The only problem I see with the acrylic right now, is how to make it blend in at the edges. Cutting the plate to match would probably leave pretty rough edges, even if you flame-treat it. Perhaps you'll need to make an enitre lamp(and not just the acrylic on top), to drop down into the hole?

Yeah, Dr Bob, that's a good idea. Honestly I was considering tackling this myself as I could have access to some vacuum forming equipment, as well as 3D rapid prototyping, though I'd rather let some other smarter person do it (who definitely has more time than I do). The only snag is that I think you need some way to make the upward facing headlights look right nestled in the 928-shaped hole, assuming you wanted this for more than just a track car (which I do). A half-mirror will just attenuate the light that you are trying to harvest with the 45-degree mirror, so that option doesn't work, and I'm not convinced that a formed plastic/fiberglas/whatever piece that has upward-facing holes for the lights would look right either. I agree that it is a workable solution, but I think that there would be design challenges to overcome.

I have no idea about the aston picture. I found it in a thread linked above. I just reposted it for those people who like not following links. I've been wanting to make a set of lights that look like that for a long time, but an engine fire pretty much did in my chances for that for a while.
The thread text claims that its from a DB7 Volante, but offers no further explanation. Either way, I find it unlikely that it is a drop-in replacement, but I like the look anyway. If someone is down to do some fabbing, or happens to have an extra DB7 headlight assembly lying around, we can find out.

The 928 lights are flat, whereas the DB7 light moulds into the side of the wing/nose slightly, hence it's not flat and more of a skewed oval shape in area, slightly bigger too -

However, looking at the 928 conversion, and the picture above (notice the black border/seal around the db7 light), you can see where the black edge seems to taper off on the 928, maybe it was cut to fit the 928? And basically the top part matches up nicely, just needs a bit of cutting to the bottom. Or I've just been staring at it for too long!!

c_span, I think you're right. The conversion must require some cutting to pull off, which was exactly the thing I was hoping to avoid. Headlights are one of those items on the car that are tremendously contentious, and you wouldn't want to remove >70% of the market if you had to sell the car just for the look of the thing. Ideally it should be something that can be removed once its installed. Those headlights might go well on Carl's all-fiberglas front clip though (without modification), for those individuals who need body repair and figure they might as well just do the whole front end...

Most shops tinkering with HID retrofits use the FXR HIDs from The Retrofit Source www.theretrofitsource.com (no affiliation). Some are really tiny with excellent cutoffs. They are the same ones from the Infinity FX series vehicles.

Nice link. Great prices for what you get, especially if the Bi-Zenons work well...hmmmm...

Very timely revival. I was just talking to Bill about this. I'm still looking for
a solution that would get the big headlight domes out of the fenders. Though
I'd prefer a flush lens cover, but I could use the one pictured. I'd just have
to cover it when racing.

BTW, it has to fit with the stock ABS pump/fender cover.

FYI: There is a DB7 projector headlight (left side) up for 300 BIN on ebay here
My fender piece is the other side (passenger on LHD cars) while evidently "left" to aston martin means driver's side on LHD car. It isn't immediately useful to me, but if someone wants to take a shot at getting it to fit...

Guys, I also am very interested in this. After reading the thread, I looked at the AM ones on ebay and was stunned at the prices. I looked at Kens link and the other one at the lights but I am just not electrical minded enough to figure out what is needed for a retro fit. Do I need ballast etc?? If someone would care to explain it, I would love to take a shot. I believe there are a lot of lbs to be saved by removing all that pop up stuff...

Tom - No. This is a black one from Vancouver (WA) with possible head gasket problems, but it may just be the water pump, which doesn't appear to be pumping.
There's about a 25 lbs net savings off the nose (equal to the weight of the front bumper and shocks). Wiring is not too difficult. One wire to the headlight motor comes directly from the headlight switch. Connect this to a relay, and you have low beams. (Remove the headlight relay, put in a jumper, and you have another wire for high beams.) The biggest hurdle for me was the bracketry and positioning the headlight for the least cutoff from the fender opening.
