At that price you have to look at other marques and make comparisons.
And the 928 would have to be truly in the highest state of mantenance, in my opinion.
All-porsche parts. Newer motormounts, newer timing belt w/ porsche pump, etc.
And a very through PPI by a real 928 specialist. Just to make sure we are dealing with a straight, never hit, original equipment unit.
The last really nice 85 we saw move was two years ago, automatic, 10K miles or so I think, around 13K. Dwayne from california bought it, about 20 miles from me here in Virginia.
Two low mileage 5 speeds emerged last year in the northeast. One was a black 86.5 with around 7K miles, charity auction, ended up in the hands of a pair of used carlot guys in PA and was being touted as a gift of god for around 28K or so. Kind of dropped off the horizon after a few attempts. It was very special looking.
Similar one emerged in PA, but a different car. Not sure where it ended up.
Firemed aka Sailmed bought a 5 speed 86.5 local to me also. Good repaint, red, ok interior, most maint caught up, 130K mi, and he picked it up here for <4K and drove south with it.
I think others like Irishlegend bought various others for $7-$9 ish last year.

when do race car guys change their timing belts!
Ive always had a water pump or some major project that allowed me to do a WYIT timing belt change. now that the stroker has been so dependable, I wonder when it is time to pull it! its really about 3 race seasons old now. 2008, late is when the stroker went in. 5 years, 5000 miles of racing??

At $40 + another $100 of incidentals like bushings and a bearing or two, I might guess every other year, whether it needs it or not.
For a guy making a 15-20K investment in a used car, now, at least for negotiating purposes.
We changed a 48K mile original belt a few months ago on an early 86 951.
It was worn, cracked, very very loose. The water pump let go as we released tension.
Guy was bringing it in for its 50K service (orig owner).
