The crap was pretty deep at the dealership last night
The wife and I are looking for a new (used) car for her to drive around town and we heard there was a car like the one we're looking for at a local dealership. We decided to take my car which is always good for a few comments when pulling into a dealership.
"Looking to trade that in?" Is the most common one, but it never fails to attract attention in an environment where cars are the focus and most of them are bland carbon copies of one another. (I honestly can't tell the difference between many of the new SUVs at more than a few paces).
Anyway, so we get there and just as we're getting out an older guy walks over and starts ogling. He says he drove one back in the day when we was stationed in Germany. So we start talking a little but he doesn't really go into detail.
Then we go in and do our business and when we come back out there are no less than 4 guys standing around my car. I was smiling and they were all oohs and ahhs. Not one of them really knew anything about it though. At a car dealership!
One guy says it's the Tony Montoya car, right? Another one says (just to confirm his suspicion) 'It's a non-turbo six, right?'. Swing and a miss. Yeah, there were no turbo 928s, and this is a 5-speed 8 cylinder, but nice try.
Then I try to bring in the first guy I was talking to, 'Hey, you drove one of these on the Autobahn, right? That must have been something. What year was that?'.
'Oh, it must have been 1970'.
Is that so?
When I got in to drive away and the headlights popped up it drew some more
points and appreciation.
These cars are so underappreciated it's not funny.

hahaha, love that.
One of the joys of having a trailer park close to our neighborhood is the comments you get when you hit the corner store. "is that a 2011 Ferarri?" "Nice 911" "nice Porch" "too bad it only has 6 cylinders" "Must be nice to be that rich" Et al.
Thank God they are closing that place down.

My neighbor told me " I had one of those before I got married". So we talk for a bit and then he tells me "yep, I had one of these 924's just like this one."
Hmm, not quite the same.
I just smiled and agreed.

Had the same experience when I stopped at a Honda place one day. Just assumed the sales guys were bored out of their minds, but there they all were, huddled around the GTS checking it out.
I offered to let the salesman we bought my wife's car from take it around the block, you should have seen the look on those other guys' faces ;-)

Our 88 is my sons daily driver, my favorite is all the parents in the community that were trying to figure out how we could afford to buy my son a brand new Porsche...... the comments made were comical. When they realize how old it is and how many miles are on it they change their tune. Then they think I am a hoorible parent that I would not put my son in a safe car with at least 6 airbags..... cant win with some people. After a few minutes talking, they soon start to figure out I have less in my 88 than they spent on the car for their son/daughter.
Or the cop that pulls you over, gives you a break and spends 10 minutes asking you questions about your car...... 113 is my lucky number.

I took my 85 in for it's safety inspection this weekend. I haven't taken it to this place before. A lot of younger (I say younger as in late 20's early 30's) guys working there. They were all drooling over it. Asking me all kinds of questions about it. I told them what I knew and the rest I made up. The guy that had to take it for a ride to check the "drive-ability" came back with a huge smile on his face. (my tires weren't smoking, thank God!) The manager seemed to know some about the 928's. The rest were pretty clueless, but loved it.

Three Wheelin'
My first of this type was when I went to have it inspected for the first time after delivery to me. I point out to the guy where 1st gear is, he says condescendly "I know that, we see quite a few of these here"...
Then when he pulls in to do visual walks around it a couple times then comes and gets me and asks where the release is for the engine cover. I show him and he proceeds to walk... to THE BACK of the car, he thought it was rear engined! ROFL, yeah, right you have seen quite a few of them.. r-i-g-h-t

When people blindly ask: "What is it" I usually reply "1968 Buick Lesabre SS"

We have a Thursday night local car meet. Lot's of UF kids show up with various projects, often turbo Civics, Eclipses, EVOs, or STIs/WRXs. The first night I brought out the 928 I hadn't realized how impressive the "spider" intake looks to people the first time they see it. It is almost like a work of art. And the headlights are always a winner.

When I got mine, we had a know-it-all salesman working in my office. I told him it was a 928, he asked me if it had a 2.8 v6 and I said no, a 5.0 v8. He looked at me really concerned and said, "I don't think that is the original engine"!
