Good paint + modern wheels seem to raise the interest level.

No modern wheels, just a new take on the 'old school' PDs:

When people blindly ask: "What is it" I usually reply "1968 Buick Lesabre SS"
Now that's funny! I need to remember that line.

It is amazing how little people know about these cars, but they are ALWAYS appreciated and checked out in as much detail as the person has time for. They are truly a sight to behold. Most folks posting on this thread have NICE 928's so just think about the last time (other than a 928 gathering or one of your friends here) you saw a NICE 928 on the road? Heck think about the last time you saw ANY 928 on the road! The cars are as rare as "hen's teeth"! Nice ones even more so. My uncle had a BRAND NEW '84 911 Cab (it was the first Porsche I ever drove, but we had 914's when I was growing up and my grandfather had a 356 before I was born) and I didn't see my first 928 till '92!!!

Hmm, not quite the same.
I just smiled and agreed.

I have had lots of funny things like this happen.

But one of the best was a teenager sitting on the curb as I was fueling up my car and he stood up and went to walk away while staring at the car. Turns out, he needed to look where he was going instead. Walked right into the gas pump and fell on his butt.

back in 2005 when I got Sharky, my 88 S54 auto I took it to the drag strip....there was a kid with an E36 M3 there that kept talking about how he had this & that engine mod and all this custom work...to increase from 240 to 315hp.... I told him this had 316 stock in 1988..... So we line them up and he pulls me off the line, just to get got at about 1/8th mile..... back in line he asks "thats got a flat six....it sure doesn't sound like it!!"

Back in '03, when we pulled up to see the house that we now live in, my neighbour a few houses down, told his wife........"that guy does his own repairs". She thought he was full $hit and that I'm just another spolied Porsche owner, so he had to explain why an old 928 is a financial scuicide if a shop or a delaership works on it. He is a gearhead too and was happy when we moved in, been good freinds ever since.

"Looking to trade that in?" Is the most common one, but it never fails to attract attention in an environment where cars are the focus and most of them are bland carbon copies of one another. (I honestly can't tell the difference between many of the new SUVs at more than a few paces).

Anyway, so we get there and just as we're getting out an older guy walks over and starts ogling. He says he drove one back in the day when we was stationed in Germany. So we start talking a little but he doesn't really go into detail.

Then we go in and do our business and when we come back out there are no less than 4 guys standing around my car. I was smiling and they were all oohs and ahhs. Not one of them really knew anything about it though. At a car dealership!

One guy says it's the Tony Montoya car, right? Another one says (just to confirm his suspicion) 'It's a non-turbo six, right?'. Swing and a miss. Yeah, there were no turbo 928s, and this is a 5-speed 8 cylinder, but nice try.
Then I try to bring in the first guy I was talking to, 'Hey, you drove one of these on the Autobahn, right? That must have been something. What year was that?'.

'Oh, it must have been 1970'.

Is that so?

When I got in to drive away and the headlights popped up it drew some more
points and appreciation.

These cars are so underappreciated it's not funny.
good factoid of it all. I can imagine.
There really is something special in the cars design that's not quite noticed yet by all.
your last sentence- absolutely.

Dropped Karen off at the toyota store to pick up her 4Runner, where the owner is a member of the church group. He looks at the car and says that it's the one you can't use wheel cleaner on. Family business, and he'd started out in the detail shop there as a teenager. Learned then that the acidic cleaners they'd used on the wheels would stain them and the car ower would let them replace the ruined wheels. Twenty-some years later, and he remembers the car by how much a new set of flats cost. Now that's brand recognition! He still give K her Toyotas at his actual cost +$200, a very nice perk. No, I won't be trading the black car in on a Highlander...

That lesson was probably learned the hard way! It was at the shop that did a little work on my S4 back in '98! They stripped the wheels clean! Cost them more to replace my wheels with newly refinished ones than I paid for the work they did!

The guy that had to take it for a ride to check the "drive-ability" came back with a huge smile on his face. (my tires weren't smoking, thank God!) The manager seemed to know some about the 928's. The rest were pretty clueless, but loved it.
I went for emissions inspection a few months ago. The four technicians spent 15 minutes messing with the car before finally asking me "is the engine in the front or the back".

When it was time for the gas cap pressure test I told the woman doing the test that they don't have the proper fitting for the 928's gas cap. She said they got "all new equipment" so they now have the correct one. The cap failed. What are the chances that the NJ MVC has the proper fitting for the 928's gas cap when there is only one cap that fits the car correctly?
