Default How to check gear oil in GT tranny? Forget it, I just can't see very well!!!

WSM shows fill and rear drain plug at rear of transaxle. Picture and description appear to be for an earlier model. My GT with LSD only has a drain plug and what looks like an electrical sending unit on the case rear. There is a protruding hex head plug (?) on the passenger side of the tranny case. Is that the fill/level check hole?
Help!

fill and drain plugs are both on the back of the tranny cover..one about middle...one near the bottom. The sender is the speedo sensor..

There might be a metal plate covering up the lower hole back there..

Check the pic I've attached it's an auto..but the cover is over the rear drain hole...you can pull the top plug and check the level there.. (the speed sensor was not on this car..91S4)

please post a picture of what you looking at.
if you remove a plug on the side of the trans you may have a spring and ball come out.

AFAIK there are 2 drains and one fill on your transaxle
one drain and one fill on the rear cover,
and one drain at the front below the TT to Trans connection

Sorry to be a bother. I gave up too soon. The fill plug is behind the exhaust pipe and I didn't look very carefully. Thanks and excuse my poor eyesight!

If you remove the Hex plug on the side of the transmission then you WILL be removing the transmission to be able to remove and reinstall the centering spring for the gear lever.

If you remove this and you do not drop the transmission and remove/reinstall then you WILL grenade your transmission.

You wouldnt be the first either. I just had to do this for a local fellow who attempted his own oil change.....

So..when did Porsche add the cover plate in the pic I posted above?...is that an AT only thing? I know my GT doesn't have one...

No rear heat shield on a '90 GT box.

Here's the back of a GT gearbox, showing both plugs:

Jim, to make sure it's the tranny the car was born with, it should say G28.55 on the rear most rib on the bottom:

Also..if you drain your tranny..make sure you can get the fill open too...otherwise you'll be pulling the whole cover off... and like Stan mentioned there's another drain up front of the trans too...

Yeah, I've been told to be sure to open both drain plugs, there's apparently a divider on the floor inside that prevents full draining if only one plug is opened.

G28.55 it is.

Not my day! Changing oil, converting from 5-40 Castrol Syntec which the dealer installed, to 20-50 Brad Penn. Had the case of B Penn on the shelf for about 8 months. At that time I could not buy it locally so it was a $60 mail order purchase through Amazon. Started to pour the first quart and it seemed a bit thick. Looked at the label.......you guessed it, straight 50W.
The good news is there is now a retailer in my town. Called them and he said he would take the 50 in trade. Apparently they stock 50w and 70w for alcohol fuelers.
At least I won't have to recycle 11.5 quarts of $5 per quart oil!(or will it be $7 by now)
