Brendan,

I just got the cams into my car, and will be doing a rear/mid mount turbo on my next break (with the cams). I already have the turbo. I will be building the exhaust out of stainless, and will then be ceramic coating it.

I have always been in awe of how much work you get done at one time Colin.

Which turbo have you chosen?

Are you using stainless MIG wire? Which gas mix?

I was thinking if its coated, that steel could be used to ease welding (for me).

Is this the MS car? I noticed (I guess I forgot) that the LH/EZF loom is almost completely on its own, with only a few inputs into the central electric board - which means to me that an installation of MSIII would be relatively simple - except that the S3 motor does not have a cam sensor that I am aware of.

This is my daily driver, and it has to stay that way. I am getting the interior worked out, and it was already painted pretty well, so I think its a great platform for me.

Stock headers into a Y would work best, nestle the turbo maybe by the trans, or take the pipe to the rear muffler location for more room, less heat intensity for the transaxle.

BC,

I will be using a SS wire in a MIG pound gun with a tri-mix gas for tacking etc. After that I will remove the system and I will TIG weld it with Argon. It is just as easy to work with SS as it is to work in mild steel for me, but SS has much better properties for a turbo app. Maybe you should go all out and build your system out of inconel!

I will either use the factory manifolds, or I will make some shorty headers. If I use the factory manifolds, I will cut off the 3 bolt flange, and I will be welding on a V band flange to aid in sealing, port matching, and ease the removal of the system.

I will be doing a Y pipe with a single 3" (maybe 3.5") back to the turbo.

The other thing BC is that I am utilizing a new turbo which does not require oil......
This means, no pump to move it back to the motor, etc. Makes for a much more simplified install.
If I mount the turbo where MR did, then I will be putting the outlet of the turbo straight out to the side, exiting by the rear tire. It will probably be loud, But I dont mind.

All this is on a pretty much bone stock 87 with the stock LH/EZK....... for now.

Depending on how much power I decide to shoot for with this car, I may be converting to MSII, or VEMS, or something else. I am leaning towards VEMS though. I can build the harness, over a couple days outside the car. I can then convert the car in a day, which is good considering its my DD that this is all being done on.

I think you are supposed to keep the exhaust smaller for more velocity right?

What turbo are you talking about?

I would do this with the intent of using ethanol, as then I could throw on the 75lb injectors that I have that are too small for the other car's usage. Fuelab makes a smaller pump now that would fit better in the stock location. With the 75lb injectos, MS is the only viable option for this car budget wise.

keeping the pipe smaller to keep velocity up yes, but after a certain power level you need to step it up......

shoot me off an email if you want more on the turbo used. I will share details once I have it installed and tested though.
