89 S4 stereo amp speaker wires output?
PO had a crappy panasonic stereo and did a mangle of the speaker wires so need to figure out which speaker wires from the amp in right side by seat are out put to speakers.
Looking at the image below, which side of the amp are the output to the speakers and which are the input from the head unit? Are the INPUTS from the head unit the ones on the LEFT or the RIGHT?

the easiest way to do it is using a pair of wire leads [preferably with alligator clips] and a 9V battery. for each pair of wires, connect & disconnect the leads to the 9V battery [doesn't matter what polarity order the terminals are in]. the speaker connected to that wire pair will crackle slightly... 9V is small enough that it won't damage anything in the process.

If you have aftermarket speakers and a new head unit, do yourself a favor and bypass the factory amp. It isn't set up for the proper load. I just ran new wires for mine and it sounds better than ever, even with the same speakers I've had in it (audiobahn) for years.

The speakers are at individual two-pin blade connectors that plug into the amp itself. That should help you ID which are speaker wires. After that, the recommended 9V battery trick is the easiest way to ID which wires go where.

I second fraggle's notion of removing the amp. I put in an aftermarket head unit, but I still have the factory speakers w/o the inline amps. New head units have much better digital noise reduction and have plenty of juice to power those speakers for normal audiophiles.

I'm not even close to audiophile anymore! Too much ducati seat time with straight pipes.
The battery trick is a good one though. You still need to figure out polarity to keep the speakers in phase.
Best with modern equipment is to bypass the amp. Most head units put out more power anyway.

Yeah, that is what I am going to do, disconnect the OEM amp. Still got to figure out what the PO did to the antenna connection and the speaker wires...
Weirdness going on is
- There is a US style antenna plug which was plugged into the crappy panasonic unit. The OEM plug is there but useless as they mangled it. So question is where does the antenna plugh which they had plugged into the panasonic unit connect to? Gotta trace that down
- They were running RCA to the pre-ouits on the panasonic unit then to the OEM Porsche amp. Worked but weirdity is there are only 6 speaker wires, i.e. 3 + and 3 - ones. Simply solution is to just rewire all the speakers with new wire since have to replace the speakers anyway due to dry rot.
Confused a bit by the speaker sizes though due to differing answers here on RL as well as conflicts between what Crutchfield and others say are the correct sizes.
In the doors there are by my measurements a 5 1/4 and a 3 1/2 in each door
In the rear there are two 6 1/2, two 5 1/4 and two 3 1/2
All speakers are the original ones which came with the car... Any care to clarify speaker sizes on a 1989 S4?
THANKS!

Grab this set for the doors, it's the one I have installed RIGHT NOW! These will drop right in.

If you're careful with the old tweeters, and don't mind destructively disassembling them, you can put the new ones in the old housings and they'll look great. You will need a touch of superglue to put things back correctly. A search for old threads under "Audiobahn" will probably get you more detail.
I didn't bother with the little ones all the way in the back.
HA! Found the original thread that spurred me to buy these.

any 4" speaker will do for the larger one in the door. the tweeter is tricker. i have a few sourced out, but have not made up my mind on how to best get the tweet back in there. i removed the tweeter, and the hole from the old bracket is 2.5" i think a 3" speaker will work in the tweeter spot

Alas, those are NLA, I found some MB Quarts which should be just the ticket, contacting seller to see if he will do a package deal. Lots of work left, wiring, hooking up amp when it arrives and then WOOT! Installing Hans new sub enclosure!
Plus got to send off the faceplate for my Becker CDR-220 to get modified or what not so I can read it in the S4! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

there used to be a series of Diamond Audio 4" units that would fit without modification... They were discontinued from the factory but available from some resellers.. I was looking at those for awhile.

for $74.99
and

for $289.99
Dont want to be a penny pincher but would of course rather spend $75 than $290...

Very happy with the German made MB Quart that I have in the doors. When I replace my rear quarters I'll find some 6.5's to do those too.

YIKES! Gonna have to get my folks at the office to bump up their sales this week to pay for all the stuff! Order placed for 2 sets of 6.5" MB Quart Mid-Bass (gonna put one in each door at forward lower area), 2 sets of MB Quart 4" seperates, RCA cables and speaker wire and Kenwood XS5 amp... Man that hurt the pocket book!
