I think most people don't need an engine rebuild. I could easily see a week of hands on training of basic maintenance such as brake bleeding, coolant flushing, ground cleaning, fuel system, electronics, fuse and relay replacement, basic diagnostics, essential tools. Maybe a TB/WP. We all think we know how to do these things, but a week with Greg Brown may completely change our understanding of thorough and correct. A goal would be to have each car completely up to date on all maintenance by the end of the week.

I think the key would be coming up with a schedule that is largely applicable to each vehicle and owner. I also think that maybe five hours of group work a day followed by four hours of individual work would be best so each can go his own pace and address variations in need and maintenance up-to-date-ness.

A few questions:
- Where would there be room for this camp?
- Who provides the tools?
- Who provides fluids, towels, incidentals, breakage?
- Where does a car go if it isn't running at week's end?
- Who will fund my scholarship?
- What does Greg Brown think?

I assume the people would have to run over to 928 International for parts as needed, so they would have to be part of the program in order to have parts available.

and its pull your own engine and supply everything you need and then $5000.
I love to learn but from what I have heard, its a bit much for most members

Having a Grand Master direct a complete rebuild in Hell's Kitchen mode would be awesome. Each of us doing our own car sounds great until Murphy jumps in with a stripped bolt, missing bolt, missing part, etc. Even working on a single car will need multiple parts vendors overnighting parts in.

It definitely needs to be filmed and Greg could sell the DVDs.

Only to fools that think they can do what he does.

Some one who has not spent a lifetime doing this, is not going to do it to his level, just not going to happen.

There is a great deal of feel to things like that, some simple and some a learned thing, take using a torque wrench, many can use them, few can do it right.

A Snap-On electronic will show just how far off most are going to be higher than the desired torque that have used a click type.

How many are going to have several thousand dollars worth of Torque wrenches, and not a craftsman or harbor freight one in the pile.

The feel for loose chain, just to many things to consider here.

I could go on and on, but a lay person is just not going to do it to a professional level as a 928 expert will, and there are damn few of them around.

I could spend two months with him doing nothing but motors, and end the end they may be close, his would be better, and both would have his heads.

Not a person here, that I know of has his skills with 928 heads, you can not teach that.

This in no means implies that any one who owns a 928 would be wasting time following a build he does, but it is not going to replace GB.

While I have not spoken to GB about this, I am sure he is no more going to allow that than I would at my shop.

Fun to fantasize about it, but as Sterling said, not going to happen.

I did not mean everybody could take things to his level, but many of his students would likely attempt to do projects that otherwise would be paid work for Greg - no?

Lack of knowledge has not stopped many 928 owners before, and a little more knowledge is not going to make them do less that is for sure.

I may be speaking out of turn here, and my views may be skewed, just my thoughts on some of this.

I know for a fact that GB goes out of his way to help others with 928 problems, he has plenty to do.

He has helped me a lot of times.

Hey, I watched a guy work on a Fiat transmission once, now I'm a highly-compensated enginner... er... engineer.

Many moons ago, Greg posted an interesting but brief treatise on how folks with almost no knowledge or experience of their own somehow become 'experts' after watching one episode of something, or hearing something described in a bar somewhere. Maybe like my Fiat transmission episode. I've seen how he works directly, and also vicariously through Rob's adventures with the stroker. It isn't something that you'll somehow absorb just being in the presence of the Master. It's decades of experience, knowing what things are supposed to look like, knowing what doesn't work at least 4x as much as knowing what does. Because he's seen the four variations that don't. My guess is that you would dig deep into your pockets for him just to break even, you might be disappointed with the extraordinary part of your class time that you spend just cleaning things before you "work" on them. You'd be a little frustrated as he tries to tell how something should feel as it goes together correctly, and how it should feel when it's all together. This isn't stuff that translates well onto a DVD either.

What Greg said to me was, "you organize it, and I'll do it. Pick a week and get some people together."

I am certainly not expecting to become a 928 expert, I am hoping to gain some knowledge, a slight amount of expertise, and most importantly-- a greater appreciation of the master technician.

This is why I started this thread as "928 Fantasy Camp"-- obviously at baseball fantasy camp one does not become Ozzie Smith by practicing double-play drills with him. But the act of going through said drills with such a master engenders a deeper appreciation of another's mastery.

I appreciate the replies on the board though. I think the points made are very valuable: Will we provide enough tuition for Greg to make money that week? Will we be wasting Greg's time? Will we be wasting each other's time? Is it unrealistic to expect to go through an engine in a week? Are there too many liability issues for Greg?

I will speak with him this week, and see what he says.
