More people die from the cold in the northeast than from earthquakes here. And the nice thing about earthquakes (as disasters go) is there's no preceding anxiety, like with a coming hurricane, flood or other storm. Just BAM! and it's over and you go on with your day.

Yeah, LOTS of skiing in California. Even Southern California.

We don't have vehicle safety inspections; they only check for proper smog equipment. Otherwise, you can drive without bumpers, fenders or hood, with worn brakes or bald tires, and nobody is going to bother you.

If they did not do smog tests, our roads would be full of old stinky "boats" with weak brakes and handling like an "elephant on roller skates" (I stole that quote from Jessa)...

The last time this happened - February '76 - I was living in the hills above Aptos at about 1,000' elevation.

We got about 6" of really wet snow.

Since it snows so rarely here, the trees were full of dead wood. We had over 30 trees come down across the driveway. Took two full days to cut our way out with chainsaws.

Snow didn't happen here, unfortunately. Turned out to be a beautiful day, if slightly chilly (52 degress).

ACK! I hope it warms up this week... I'm probably headed out there for meetings in Sunnyvale and Redwood Shores on Thurs/Fri.

If I find a good job in SoCal I would move back in a heartbeat......problem is finding a good job.
