It is possibly the original. No service records and I'm not very familiar with the stock version of OBs.

Awsome score... we love the early cars here (the gf and I) two 78s and three 79s all have been rescues like yours. You have some work ahead of you but once you clean it out and make an inventory of parts you have, parts you need and parts you want to upgrade things will become alot less scarey. Remember the swapmeet in PA is coming up fast make your list of needs and wants soon and see if you can find them there, best prices we have found anywhere. If there is any thing you don't understand or need to know feel free to msg us we are quite good at solving most early car age related probs ....good luck

+1 on the nice score. Patience will make that car a beauty. I am personally in the throws of the patience part.

Separately, I find Paul to be the most encouraging person on RL928 when it comes to these rescues. He always appreciates the diamond in the rough. Just sayin'.

Oil in the exhaust reminds me of my 78 euro which had bad valve guides. You may want to pull the spider and inspect the back of the intake valves for oil residue or caking.

You'll need to print and use this too before starting it, or you'll have to do it after that CIS sucks in all the crap thats left in the lines! Personal experience there

Thanks for the insight. I thought about pulling the engine and just going through it given the list of unknowns. Although the adventurous side of me wants to get it started and on the road soon.

How is your project going?

It's only been 4 months since this thread began, so I'd like to say, "Good Luck on your project"!

My wp gave up several months ago and am just getting ready to do an engine swap to a M28/11. Looking around for '78 odds & ends and found your post.

Slowly. Which is what I intended. I have to get smart on CIS and the the systems. I have 3 sharks to feed right now. Doing a very slow PPI . working on ce panel and grounds until I can figure out CIS.

When we got #0038 it had the same paint issues as yours. I only painted the roof and hatch, black is one of the easiest colours to blend, so painting and blending in the rusted drip rails yourself is easy. The rear bumper is a little more difficult, if the paint is cracking it will all have to come off not an easy job after that high fill primer and paint, if you get runs no worries black is easy to wet sand out just put lots of paint on. Make sure you strip off all the old paint on the roof and hatch I found most of the roof was delaminated under all the old paint. don't worry about the galvanizing just use a good etch primer first before your high fill. Poor prep is the reason the paint is coming off in the first place we have much better products now days. good luck have fun.
I'm very good at CIS let me know your concerns and see if I can help.

Charles,
I have a Book by Bosch on fuel injection that covers CIS. I bought it at a yard sale for 1.00. I will see if I can dig it out. It is pretty good.
