944 vs 928 prices
i have been trying to sell my 85 euro and really thinking of a 944 just for the gas milage and the impending $4.00 a gallon coming.
and to be clear my car is not perfect but is not that bad either.
why are the 944's so high compared to the 928's . i am not trying to start a fight but i truely do not understand it? am i missing something?

85 euro is a VERY rare 928.....it IS worth more than only the very best 968 convertibles.....
While 944's sure bet better mileage than 928's....... I would just get a used Honda Civic or something to REALLY save on gas and repairs.....then save the 928 for weekend fun!!

i bought the car for the purpose of driving it as well as working on it . and planned to get some miles off my toyota sequoia. i drive 150 miles at least twice a week . and the 928 looks good in front of designer type clients. i could not pull that off with a civic. but i also do not want bp and the others to make more profit then i do. trust me i really do not want to sell what i have but as business continues to be tough and margins are shrinking i really do not know what to do.
No opinion from me as I have not driven a 944, however in the last local PCA run a 944 owner was all over me with questions about my 928 as he was looking to "upgrade" in his own words. Anyways the 944 forum has discussed this recently in a thread. So depending on what type of owners you ask the answers may be slanted.

regular 944=slow but will get 27 or so mpg on the highway.
944S 16V=20-21mpg treating it nicely on the highway (verified by me as it's my daily) premium fuel only--11:1 compression!
944S2=mid 20's if you're nice, good torque, can get away with midgrade
968=mid 20's if you're nice, 6 gears in the trans for better cruising by a bit, premium fuel
944 Turbo=well, if you can't keep your foot out of a 928 you're hosed here. In the first month I had mine I got 12mpg. Once you press your foot to the floor in a higher gear and wait for the boost to build, it's a drug...
As far as impressing people the only one that works is the turbo. It's not retro/hip cool like an 80's 928, but everyone knows/thinks they're fast. Non-Porsche people don't know the 968 exists, and you'll tire of explaining why the 3 liter in the S2 is better around town than the turbo, how there's more torque down low, how the engine is actually lighter, blah blah blah. "Porsche Turbo" just has so much cache built into it: People ooh and aah when they see my 924T!

I do not see a big price difference, they are both at rock bottom prices for good examples. Bad examples are right where they should be, which is pocket change. I believe good examples of all water cooled Porsches should see a nice jump over the next 5 years. The 80's are just getting old enough to be cool again!

Owned a 91 944 S2 and a 94 968. Liked both of them. If I were faced with your predicament I would go with the 968 with a 6 speed. Nothing exhilarating about it but a pretty damn good car and the culmination of many years of improvement, much more so than on the 928. Why? Because so many more were built (944 and 968). Problems with these money maker cars got more attention from the factory.
Very true. Nowadays, you can also do more maintenance in your own garage. Timing belt changes are simpler and those who have done them many times no longer use tension tools. I use to do the 90 degree twist method as opposed to buying the $800 9201 belt tension tool. I never had an issue with belt tension. Changing a clutch though can be a PITA on a 944 though.
That's not hard. A '98 Mercedes C230 has the same horsepower as a 944 and it's faster than it. You can pick one of those up for like $4K. The 944 is a victim of aging times. Although I have seen a TecGT equipped 944 make awe-inspiring power, literally a 25% gain actually.
all the comments are appreciated but the big question is why are 928 at par or below price levels of 944's. this i really do not understand at all. this would be like a yenko camaro going for less then a 396 nova for comparision purposes. it is not logical at all right now. and i am not picking on 944's it would make a good option for me right now but stepping down in every way should not mean stepping up in price. i have never seen this happen .
